Overview & Reviews
For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).
- Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
- Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

Dependable car - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By rodawgs - June 22 - 1:13 pmOverall, I am extremely glad I got this car. It was a little more than what I wanted to spend, but all in all, a good quality vehicle.

Love my highlander! - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By sierra - May 18 - 2:00 amThe comfort riding in both the front & rear seats is great! I love the feature of the back seats reclining & having lots of leg room. Also, good mileage and handling for a midsize suv---drives like a car, not a truck!

Best Bang for the Buck - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By lilwahine - May 14 - 10:00 amBy far the most car for the money. Handled better than the MDX or the Lexus and cost thousands less. Drives like a dream - my sister-in-law calls it "the space shuttle."

Wished I purchased it sooner - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By Casey - May 14 - 10:00 amThe Toyota Highlander is fun to drive and very comfortable. It does not ride like my last SUV - Jeep Cherokee, which was like being in a truck. This is just like driving a car. I drive 36 miles a day on the highway and if I didnt know that I was driving a SUV, I would swear I am driving a car. I purchased the base model that had a lot of extras on it. The only thing that I dont use is the Home-link remote on the visor. It will not work on the garage door opener. It handled very well in the snow and ice this past winter. I love it and wish I bought it sooner.

highlander review - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By Rolrhokmom - May 14 - 10:00 amHave owned Toyotas for 15 years and this SUV rides like a high quality car. Very easy to drive, park, roomy in the drivers compartment (especially compared to many other SUVs we looked at), and has the reliable toyota name behind it,

Expensive to maintain - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By doug128 - April 24 - 1:26 amI enjoy driving the Highlander but I have found it very expensive to maintain. I have had to replace 7 wheel bearings and the drive shaft to the rear wheels because of the bearings. It has 93,000 miles on it now. Brakes have also been expensive as it seems the ABS sensor are quite sensitive to failure and have had to replace some with the brakes which makes it very costly. I bought the Toyota as it was rated as a reliable car. It has turned out to be very expensive!

Recommend the Highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By craig123 - April 11 - 2:00 amVery comfortable, drives like a car. All instruments/controls easy to read and find. Third row seat is easy to open and close. Alot of cargo room without third row seat up. Plenty of power (have not towed with it yet) and smooth shifting 5 speed automatic. Build quality on this one is great.

From Explorer to Highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By Toyota First Time Bu - April 6 - 2:00 amMy first Toyota. Had been driving Ford Explorers for the past few years and I was pleasently surprised by the refining charcteristics of the Highlander. Throttle Responsiveness is much nicer than Explorer (2002 model comparison) as is handling, and interior design. Brake pedal feels a bit mushy in the Highlander. Overall, I would say the Highlander is very refined mid size SUV that competes or exceeds others in its class.

Toyota Highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By Jesus Prado - April 1 - 10:00 amThe 2004 Toyota HIghlander is a well- built reliable car-like suv. It has very good gas mileage on the freeway. It is a very fun to drive car. It has room for 7 third row seat. But it is a mid-size suv so the third row seat is only compatible for children. The sound system is very poor even with JBL sound. It is a very secure well built suv and I should not be surprised because it is built by the Japanese which is the best.It has a lot of safety features and it has disk brakes on all 4 tires. The exterior and interior design is excellent.
