This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

This SUV is a pleasure to drive. Its has a competent ride, looks great, and comfortably seats 4 adults. The 4 cylinder has plenty of spunk and is very quiet at crusing speed. (On the highway, engine noise is quite pronounced in my 4 cylinder Honda.)

  • Toyota Kluger CVX (Toyota Highlander) - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I purchased as you Americans Call a Highlander and we call it a Kluger in Australia. We have a model which you dont have in the US where its identical to the limited with out the sunroof and Satellite Navigation called CVX. That is what I got. Its a very smooth ride and fabouls offroad. I have been using the vehicle at Australias snow season at the Victorian Snow Fields. Handled snow very well!!! After that, I have travelled to Queenslands beaches. Handled well I opted for the V6 3.3l AWD modeI would only ever recommend this model. Overall a fantastic car to take the kids either to the snow or sand.

  • Not What I Expected - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Although the Highlander overall is adequate, its shortfalls are obvious. The gas mileage is terrible, Ive yet to get more than 16 mpg even on the fwy. If you accelerate at the wrong time the trans just winds out while you go nowhere. The seats are the most comfy I found in this genre of car, and the car has alot of pep to it.

  • My Highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I LOVE MY TOYOTA HIGHLANDER! I previously owned a Toyota Camry and because I loved the look, performance, and dependability of my car I knew I wanted to stay with Toyota for my next vehicle. The Highlander is a larger vehicle without the bulkiness of alot of the SUVs out there. My highlander fits my style and size perfectly. I purchased my vehicle just in time for the New England winter season. Ive never experienced problems in the snow or ice with my Toyota.

Although criticized for its lack of dramatic styling this is a handsome well thought out alternative SUV for those not desiring to spend the majority of there testosterone driving around in the woods! Great smooth power and comfortable shure footed handling with tastefull understated elegance.

Taught chasis and suspension. No rattles or creaks. Engine 3.3L has lots of torque, tons better than that whirring 3.0L of old model, nice grunting rumble under load. Smooth tranny. Responsive steering, breaking action is a bit slow to catch, could scare you when pedal pressures are low, wont stop quite as nimbly as you might expect.

  • Vehicle is enjoyable! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Owning a Highlander is, so far, a good experience (at 2,500 miles). The inside contour is pleasing, and the vehicle seems to be very safety oriented. Everything about the design seems to be built with the consumer in mind. Its fun to drive, handles very well, and is fairly quiet.

  • Great all around car - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Bought a few days ago. Drivability is great. Rides better than my Lexus IS300. 4cyl has good pick-up and smooth. Engine noise is moderate and all amenities for around $25,000. Very reasonable and has Toyota reliability. I like this car.
