This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

  • 04 Toyota Highlander - Great Vehicle - 2004 Toyota Highlander

The vehicles overall performance is great. Handles well in snow/ice. The only thing I cant get seem to get over is the fact that I have to hear this short clicking sound everytime I first start the vehicle, put in drive and accelerate. I took my vehicle in twice when I first noticed this clicking and was told its normal... thats the ABS actuator turning on. Other than that, I feel I made a good investment in this vehicle... spent a little more than I anticipated but its worth it. I could have paid less and got more incentives for another vehicle but I would have gotten less durability and less quality.

  • An SUV I can live with - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Please understand that I really hate SUVs, but my family needed a car that could hold 6-7. I have always thought that the Highlander was the best looking small SUV, but I didnt realize that it had a third seat that would allow it to hold our family. We sold our Eurovan and bought a dealer demo, and I think its the best car I have ever owned. At 25K miles, its tight, quiet, comfortable, and everything that I could ask for in a family car. We happened to buy the loaded model, although I would have been happy with any combination as long as it had the third row. We have had it off-road once in Tahoe, and it handled a very rutted, rocky climb with ease. Highly recommended.

  • This SUV is awesome - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I have had the Highlander for almost a month and I can say it is a great vehicle. The ride and pickup are far superior to the Honda Pilot. The back seat is as big as anything on the market today. If you are looking for a vehicle that you only need the third back seat occasionally this is it. One major selling point, can negotiate the price on the Highlander where as it was take it or leave with the Pilot. The Pilot has the better third row seat, but the Highlander beats it hads down on passenger comfort and ride. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

Our new Highlander Limited 2004 is a very reliabel car what makes a good feeling while driving. This is the SUV we needed to go off-road for a little, as we use it for the most on paved road.

  • Best of Both Worlds - 2004 Toyota Highlander

The 4 cyl. Highlander is the best of both worlds in that you have a Utility Vehical that gets very good gas milage. Not for off road use the 4cyl,FWD Highlander is a great buy. I average 25 mpg city/hwy.

The Highlander is my first SUV and I love it! The ride is so smooth and comfortable. It is not built as high as some other SUVs therefore it is easier to get in and out. Gas mileage is pretty good for an SUV (better than I expected). My average MPG is 20 to 21.
