This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

  • Great car! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I love this car- SUV! I have had no porblems at all with 50,000 miles so far. Great storage, love the third seat option, and great visibility. I once had a "neck problem" and most SUVs were too "trucky"- not the Highlander- drives like a real car. Great in the snow! The only little annoying thing is that the tire pressure sensor light comes on (on the dashboard) and has to be reset frequently.

The Highlander drives extreamly smooth. You would swear you were in a car and not a truck. There is plenty of room in both the front and back. The only think I dont like about the Highlander, I feel like I have to reach for the steering wheel. If I move the seat in too far, then my feet are bent. And if I move the seat back to where my legs are more comfortable, then I keep my arms stretch out to drive. It might be that the car is still new to me and I am still trying to adjust. Overall, I am happy with the truck.

  • The SUV that rides/drives like a car - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

This is the one & only SUV that I have driven/experienced that rides smooth like a car. I feel very safe & comfortable driving this vehicle. I never thought a SUV was capable of providing the comfort of a car ride. It is perfect for people looking for the size of a larger vehicle, but not willing to trade the comfort of a smooth ride. The seats are also very comfortable for travel. I never thought I owuld say this about a vehicle but "I Love this Highlander."

  • Nice ride - 2004 Toyota Highlander

The perfect second car as an addition to our family minivan. Even with the 4cyl engine has enough get up and go to merge and pass even on hills. When you gun it, it will shift hard, but it gets the job done. Under the regular normal driving conditions, the shifting is fine. Our base model is really well equipped and comfortable. Toyota has covered all the bases with creature comforts like cup holders, lighting and power outlets. Storage area is great. We can get the family of 4, luggage and a couple of bikes in the vehicle with no problems. Highlander is a great option if you want a little more room, and a Camry ride without going to a monser size SUV.

  • The most satifying car Ive ever owned! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Used to admire Benz and owned from 190 to S class. All have more problems than this silky smooth Highlander. Wifes car and she loves it. Ride is smoother than my curret Lexus with 2000 miles on it. Hard to believe. 10,000 miles and no problem whatsoever so far. Absolute buy!!

  • Very Happy w/my HL - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Overall, the HL feels very solid and more refined than other SUV in its class. Drives like a car, easy to park in tight spots. Interior is very pleasant especially with the "faux" wood trim.

  • This is a great car - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I bought this SUV because it had been rated excellent and I am so glad I did. Its beautiful to look at and so much fun to drive. I dont have to fill up as often with this SUV as my parents do with their Honda Pilot.

  • My second toyota highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

I especially like the way the front seat fits my lower back. This is the 2nd one Ive bought for this reason. The car also feels very safe and is a good size for a woman who enjoys driving an suv, travels between two states frequently, and hauls many things. Also the gas mileage is good for an suv, I think 21+ depending on where I am.

Only had my Highlander two weeks and I absolutely love it. The ride is smooth, the handling great. The inside is designed well. Anyone looking for a SUV with the comfort of a smooth ride, look no further.
