This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's midsize SUV is fully redesigned for 2008. Significantly larger than the original, the 2008 Highlander features a standard V6 engine and a habitable third-row seat.

Pros:
  • Powerful and fuel-efficient V6, easy to maneuver for its size, user-friendly cabin design with reconfigurable second-row seats and a fully usable third row.
Cons:
  • Third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections.

  • Now is the time to buy it! - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I just replaced my 03 V8 4Runner Limited with an 08 Highlander Limited AWD. Smooth engine, great design; a lot more family features and creature comforts than the 4Runner. Very comfortable, steering and accelerator are softer than 4Runner, brakes are tighter. Nearly same storage capacity; rides more like a car. Worried about the beautifully shaped sheet metal doors in parking lots. Wheels are 19- inch; tires will be expensive to replace. Captains chairs in second row are neat; third row stows flat--dont even know its there. Keyless entry/start/stop is awesome. The vehicle feels well made with heavy doors, plenty of safety features. Also tested 09 RAV4, which is a great little brother...

I traded in my 2005 Volvo XC90 for the 08 Highlander and this was the best decision I have made in a long time. The Highlander has many "extras" and is much roomier than the Volvo. I can actually stretch my legs in the 2nd row!

Just got the new highlander - wonderful car. Works well and has enough room for 7. Contrary to beliefs, and reading many reviews, the highlander does have PLENTY of room for a full size adult in the 3rd row. In addition, the highlander can move the seats and contains much more room inside.

This car is amazing, its a complete Lexus platform as far as design and quality! I think this car is going to set new standards for the SUV market. Just a beautiful and unique car.

Replaced our 2003 Honda CRV with the Highlander Sport AWD to gain the third seat for hauling grandkids. Has been fun to drive, although it seems large in restricted parking areas. Interior comfortable & well appointed. Once the third seat is up there is no storage space. We did have to have one of the tires replaced when it picked up a screw in the sidewall. Because of its unusual size there were limited sources and it cost us $225 to replace it.

  • Good choice. - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I bought my Highlander about 3 months ago. Previous to this I drove a BMW X5 and wanted to get something with better fuel economy. I always liked Toyotas but did not like the prevous Highlander. When the redesigned Highlander came out I figured the time was right to get one. My biggest disappointment was the navigation system. First the way it is packaged becomes an expensive option as you have to get the rear seat entertainment system with it. Second, you can only put information in it when the car is stopped which really makes using it aggravating. Third, it is a complicated system and fails to find a number of streets that it should. The system in my wifes Honda is much better.

  • Second to none - 2008 Toyota Highlander

We just bought a base model Highlander and absolutely love it. The color is charcoal gray, and it came with a light gray cloth interior. However, we worked a deal to get black leather installed. The dealership did an outstanding job with the leather seats, and the end product is phenomenal. The black leather on top of the light gray seat base is a perfect complement to the black dashboard with the light gray lower dash. We recently purchased the 19" wheels found on the Limited and Sport models off of eBay (lucky lucky) significantly cheaper than we would have paid through the dealer. It has such a custom feel now. We just love it.

  • We love our 2008 Highlander Sport - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Just purchased our 2008 Highlander Sport model. It has everything our family needs. I love everything about this car. The roomy interior, the versatility of the stow-n-go center seat/console, the flip down third row when we need it and the large cargo area in the back when we dont. It has the rear back-up cam which is very cool, the built-in antenna in the windshield and the pop-up rear window. We test drove the 2007 and this 2008 is so much bigger, inside and out. I really like the masculine look of the car and the comfortable, quiet ride, which is Toyotas trademark. Well be keeping this one for a long time.

  • Excellent Buy - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Some well conceived refinements make this iteration of the Highlander darn close to perfect. A slight increase in size and improved exterior styling eliminate much of the stodginess of its ancestors. The standard 6-cyl engine is more than adequate for a vehicle this size. Like other Toyotas with this 269hp motor, mileage will vary GREATLY depending on how the individual drives the vehicle. The third-row seat has been made more usable with the capability to change the 2nd rows configuration. The base model is generally well appointed, with easy to use stereo and climate controls and cupholders everywhere. Seats are comfortable, but I covered the standard gray cloth with tailored seat covers.

I have been looking for cars and reading their specs for 8 months. I decided to wait for the 2008 Highlander and the Nissan Rogue. Although I loved the Rogue my husband complained that his knees/legs hit the center console! I needed these things in a car: comfort, good economy for the vehicle size, takes regular unleaded gas, enough instant pickup to get on the freeway, decent warranty. The V-6 offers as much power as did my V-8 Mountaineer. I am averaging 21 mpg so far. The comfort is not the best but better than most short seated cars in this price range.
