This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

  • Typical Toyota, awesome! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Taught chasis, quiet engine with a nice v6 growl under full throttle, nimble handling, smooth powertrain youd never guess it was AWD. Flawless build quality, very nice cloth seating fabric and excellent color selections. The center console is oddly designed and frustrating to use its underside storage shelf while driving.

  • good but not perfact - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I have driven this car for three months, 3900 miles. The 3.3 engine is not powerful as I thought, compared with my 2.3 super charger V6 and 4.2 V8 engine(may be 4AW drive). 5-speed auto transmission is smooth but jump when climb hill in cruise control mode. And sometimes you can feel low gear change when you slowly stop. Its difficult to close the moonroof precisely (shouldnt put tilt and open devices together). There is no way to drive with window or moonroof open (too much noise bounce inside. may be box interior shape?) Car suspension system is good on rough road. Standard stereo system is bad with ugly antenna (you cannot go to auto wash garage).

Only had the vehicle for two days. Thought I really wanted one...did the homework...but I am VERY DISAPPOINTED. The vehicle is too LOUD, and dont open the back windows...youll lose your ear drums...ride is ok...it feels "loose" to me ...the engine ticks and sound "old" ...the leather seats up front are totally uncomfortable...my neck hurts. Its too small up front..no place to put cell, purse, etc. Ill keep it until its okay to trade unless the dealer will take it back (HA HA!!) or anyone out there will buy it for the high end $32+ I paid ( contact me)! Have had a 95 Avalon and like daughters 97 Camry ride better.

This is our fourth Toyota. We are pleased overall with the Highlander. However, we are having problems with the alignment. Currently, have 23,000 miles. The 6yr/100,000 mile tires are experiencing unusual wear due to back wheel mis-alignment. These tires require rotation and balancing ever 6000 miles(our dealer charges $49.50). To this point the dealer is not standing behind the warranty for alignment.

Have had the car for 7-8 months and have had nothing but outstanding performance. Not one problem!! Only downside is gas mileage. Have taken it on several trips and it has performed as I had hoped. Would highly recommend this vehicle.

  • Great Buy - 2004 Toyota Highlander

We just bought this vehicle, but we love it already. It is such a smooth ride and feels solid. We dont even worry about reliability. Safety was also important so this was a great choice for us. The out the door price was $25,000 which was 1% over invoice, not too bad. The sticker was 25,817 plus we added about 350 to that cost in extras. Glad we stepped up in size from the CRV, Rav 4 class of vehicle.

I love driving this car! It is well designed, great in snow, wonderful sound system, and a fabulous smooth ride. I love how easy it is to get in and out. I love how much it holds especially because of the versatility the third seat offers.

OVERALL I LOVE THE CAR. THE RIDE ALONE SOLD ME. IT IS WELL DESIGNED INSIDE AND OUT AND HAS TOYOTAS RELIABILITY. ITS ROOMY AND COMFORTABLE. THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH IT IS IT HAD A RATTLE IN THE DASH OVER THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT WHICH WAS EITHER FIXED OR IT STOPPED BECAUSE IT DID IT WHEN IT WAS COLD. TOYOTA COULD IMPROVE ON ITS COLORS. LOVE SILVER BUT NOT THIS ONE, THE SILVER THEY HAD ON THE 2001 RAVS WAS GREAT. REALLY NOT MUCH TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.

This is the first Toyota (Japanese) vehicle I have ever owned. Very well thoughtout vehicle and just right mid size SUV. Very agile and easy to manuver. Good acceleration from stand still and highway speeds.
