This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

Had A 02 Nissan truck which rattled and the dealer couldnt find the problem so sold it and bought a Highlander. Nice ride and pretty comfortable. Had my Highlander for a year now. The Transmission gets twitchy once and a while. Had a few rattles but the dealer has been great helping me resolve them. The factory Toyo tires wore out quick. Put Michilen on, they ride nicer and quieter for $500. Overall though a pretty nice vehicle.

Excellent vehicle for fairly short times, gets uncomfortable on long (4 hrs or more) trips. I am 72 years old and this may not be a problem for a younger driver. Easy to park and maneuver, good visibility for driver.

I had bought the Highlander brand new for my wife back in 2004. It is one of the best of all the vehicles we had ever owned. Back then we paid for an extra extended 7 yr. warranty which paid for it self in two visits. Two yrs. ago the stereo system stopped working since it was covered, they repl. the whole unit for free. Then in this past Dec. we took it in for service, they noticed it leaking around the water pump, it was covered so it was repl. for free. Other than that we only have done regular service, brakes & the tires were repl. Ive driven it to Virginia from NJ and its still a pleasure to drive. We still get great gas mileage from this SUV.

  • Fun to drive carlike ride suv - 2004 Toyota Highlander

My 2004 Toyota Highlander 4cyl fwd is excellent, an suv with a car like ride, smooth transmission and an exceptional pick up and it can stop on a dime.Very economical and reliable transportation. However, it is not as comfortable and luxurious as a Grand Cherokee, Id recomend the V6 engine with 4 wd and you wont be disappointed.

  • Disappointing unreliability - 2004 Toyota Highlander

While the body is solid on the 2004 Highlander, the trim is shoddy. Wipers have scored both front and back windows; seat belt retractors leave belts dangling to get caught in doors; visors are floppy; broken filter rack fell out from under the dash. Yaw sensor went out as soon as the warranty did. Acceleration from a stop is sluggish; mileage is only average. Because it is built on a Tacoma platform, it handles like a truck.

This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned! I keep up with the recommended maintenance and have NEVER had a problem. The oxygen sensor had to be replaced but that was covered under the warranty. At 73,000 miles, I am still running the original tires (with every other oil change rotation). Sometimes after a check-up, the tire pressure sensor light comes on (on the dashboard) and has to be reset. This usually only happens when the tires are rotated. My Highlander is a Katrina survivor. It survived 4 feet of water (NONE in the engine or interior) and a 30 foot pine tree ($8,000 in damage). We have been considering adding a Hybrid to the family.

  • Highlander - Best Buy - 2004 Toyota Highlander

It took a while to pick a good mid-size AWD. Final choices were Subaru Forester XT Turbo, Legacy Outback V6 or Highlander V6. Forester has a comparable power, similar price and has about the same, above-average fuel consuption. Then, why not go with the "Best Buy" Highlander instead of "Recommended" Forester? Highlander has been very helpful in the first 6 - 8 inch snowfall. There were no problems getting around or getting the car parked on snowy parking lots. Every hard turn on a slippery road was handled by VSC and traction control without any problems. Very reliable, confident driving. Has a lot of useful hi-tech features plus full-time AWD!

Awesome ride feels more like a car because its on a camry frame. Smooth ride and drive. Only fault I can find with any Toyota vehicle is that they need to update their interiors....Only choice is the light gray and tan which shows dirt too easy.
