This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

  • Overall Great With a Few Questions Marks - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I purchased in 2007 with under 30,000 mi. Now at 95,000 mi curious if itll start needing repairs. Until now, virtually maintenance free. Snatches a little at take off or low speeds; hope no transmission issue. Love the height and lumbar support for my aching back. Its really easy to park and handling is good. Miss the handling of my sporty Acura coupe, but love the fact I can make the long trips without constant stops to stretch my back. Sometimes wish I had AWD, but we get snow once or twice a year, so I just park up the hill on level ground. Spoiled with the cargo space-I dont want a car! Great vehicle overall, but a little overpriced purchased new. Happy I made this purchase.

  • Toyota has done it again! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Highlander has an excellent ride and is also comfortable. Interior is well laid out and easy to use. It is full of safety features and fuel economy is good for this type of vehicle. Easy to get in and out of and as usual quality shows everywhere.

The highlander is a beautiful SUV. It is stylish with all the features anyone could want. It rides like a car. Gas mileage is great. I cant wait until the hybrid is available then it would have really out did it self. Toyotas are great vehicles. And I love to drive the highlander.

  • After testing many others... - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Highlander! I own my own business and could have gotten a big writeoff with a heavier SUV, but my conscious wouldnt allow me to buy a gas guzzler on the taxpayers bill. I took home and drove many SUVs, some over a weekend. The Pilot was so generic and bland inside, and the driving experience was blah, the Envoy was classy but a gas guzzler. No other SUVs in the low 30s are as well rounded as the Highlander. Its such a well made truck. I used to have a $50k GMC Envoy and this is as plush as that, but better in many other areas. This is my first Japanese car, and I think Ill stick with Toyotas from now on...

  • THIS IS MY SECOND ONE - 2004 Toyota Highlander

  • love my truck - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

I was looking for trucks, I originally was going to buy a Lexus, I drove both and I decided to look at a Toyota, I bought the Sequoia, had it for a year and I loved it, it but it was too big like a bus. I tried the Highlander and that was it. I love the drive its so comfortable, drives like a Lexus, half the price, it is wonderful in the snow, rain and sleet, kids love the dvd player and I love the handling. It handles like a car; Im short so it is wonderful. Ill never drive anything but a Toyota Highlander, I highly recommend it.

  • My First Toyota - 2004 Toyota Highlander

The Highlander drives extreamly smooth. You would swear you were in a car and not a truck. There is plenty of room in both the front and back. The only think I dont like about the Highlander, I feel like I have to reach for the steering wheel. If I move the seat in too far, then my feet are bent. And if I move the seat back to where my legs are more comfortable, then I keep my arms stretch out to drive. It might be that the car is still new to me and I am still trying to adjust. Overall, I am happy with the truck.

  • The SUV that rides/drives like a car - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

This is the one & only SUV that I have driven/experienced that rides smooth like a car. I feel very safe & comfortable driving this vehicle. I never thought a SUV was capable of providing the comfort of a car ride. It is perfect for people looking for the size of a larger vehicle, but not willing to trade the comfort of a smooth ride. The seats are also very comfortable for travel. I never thought I owuld say this about a vehicle but "I Love this Highlander."

  • The most satifying car Ive ever owned! - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Used to admire Benz and owned from 190 to S class. All have more problems than this silky smooth Highlander. Wifes car and she loves it. Ride is smoother than my curret Lexus with 2000 miles on it. Hard to believe. 10,000 miles and no problem whatsoever so far. Absolute buy!!
