This Year's Model Updates:

Based on the same platform as the Lexus RX 300, Toyota's new Highlander SUV represents the best blend of a station wagon, a minivan and a sport utility available on the market today. Available only with a V6 and an automatic transmission driving power to the front or all the wheels, Highlander will be sold in one trim level with a Limited package listed on the option sheet.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, car-like ride and handling, spunky V6 engine, predicted reliability.

Most reliable car I have owned. Comfortable. Lots of power for highway driving. Nicely finished.

Bought new. Smooth, powerful both around town and on highway. Handles crisply with lots of get up and go. Plenty of room front/back and cargo. No mechanical problems at all except the VSC light sometimes comes on for a while and then just as mysteriously goes off. Had it in snow twice, and it zipped along while everyone else was in the ditch. I change oil/fluids myself, but get the "big services" (30/60/90k) done at dealer. Replaced tires at 45K, front brakes at 55K, and battery at 90K (at 5 years). I would definitely buy one again - maybe the hybrid.

My 2001 highlander is the best car i have ever owned and i have bought cars for almost 60 years. As far as the engine light is concerned forget about it it, can not be fixed all you are doing is throwing money away. After wasting about $500 i realized that its a factory mistake that Toyota will not fix for that i may not buy a Toyota next time.

In 77000 miles of chicago winters and texas summers this car has never caused me a problem. All I have spent on it is changed the tires atg 35000 and bought 4 michelin crossterrains. They are a little harder ride than the bridgestone OEM but still have about another 10K in them. I bought this the first year they were out and have never regretted it once.

  • Good Vehicle to Me - 2001 Toyota Highlander

I have owned this car since 2001. I abuse my cars and am lucky to have it in for an oil change every 5,000 miles. It is in need of its 60,000 mile tune-up and I am over 100,000 miles now... ughh. One of the best vehicles I have ever owned, aside from a dead battery (my fault), and the check engine light (from some idiot not putting my air filter back correctly after an oil change) never had a problem. Plan to give it to my son who will be driving age in 2 years. Then... maybe another highlander.

My wife is 55" tall, Im 64", we both experience good visibility and comfort from the front bucket seats. The 2.4L 4cyl. engine gives good fuel economy and adequate power. Our Highlander is Vintage Gold, which is a great color!

  • Great Vehicle, not sure about dealer... - 2001 Toyota Highlander

Great vehicle. Chose a FWD V6 model in granite blue, well-equipped but not "loaded". Only problem was a salesman who was clueless beyond belief. The price went up after we ordered, and we could never get a straight story on where the vehicle was or when we were getting it ("on a ship, on a train, on a truck, on a train..."). When we finally got it, we loved it. Only quality problem is an air leak around side rear window that 2 visits to the dealership still havent fixed. Also, when rear windows are open (even slightly), it sounds like were riding in a helicopter. Dealer said "theyre all like that...close the windows and turn up the AC!"

  • Solid, reliable, safe and efficient - 2001 Toyota Highlander

My wife and I have been so pleased with her 1999 Landcruiser, we decided to buy a used Highlander for my commute and airport car. I bought my 2001 Highlander used in September 2003 and I have been very pleased. It is rock solid, runs great, no rattles, no squeaks and I average 22 MPG. I really like the high driving position and great gas milage, a rare combo in the SUV world. Mine has the 4 cylinder which has more umph then I expected. Finally, it is great on weekends for errands and hauling the kids to their events, meetings etc. Great vehicle!

  • 5yrs and 35k miles, still loving it - 2001 Toyota Highlander

Great vehicle. My wife loves this year model due to the non-connected shift pod to the console layout. Its been a very reliable vehicle and we see ourselves owning our H/L for another 5yrs at least.

  • Good Purchase Decision - 2001 Toyota Highlander

Ok, I have a daughter, I travel a lot in my vehicle and occasionally transport items like (furniture, tools, sports equipment, etc.)...this vehicle is perfect for my lifestyle. If you like sitting up higher (than a standard car), having some decent acceleration (if youre merging), incredible braking capabilities, want to transport little ones around town, or have an active lifestyle...this vehicle is for you. THIS IS NOT FOR TOWING!
