This Year's Model Updates:

Two new audio systems are available and both include three-in-one ETR/cassette/CD features. Also available are daytime running lights with auto-off. Vintage Red Pearl, Sable Pearl and Woodland Pearl replace Sunfire Red Pearl, Ruby Red and Classic Green Pearl.

Pros:
  • When it comes to people moving, the Camry gets the job done with dependability.
Cons:
  • The suspension is a bit wallowy for our tastes and the new Accord offers more interior space.

  • 135000 miles and still going strong - 1999 Toyota Camry

This has been one of the most reliable cars we have ever known. We have had Toyotas since 1976 and have found them extremely reliable! Will not buy another brand. This one has been so reliable with only a water pump going out a couple of years ago. Everything keeps working well and the engine seems to be as reliable as when we drove it off the lot new. We are still getting between 28 and 30 mpg on highway which is what we started with. Will drive it until it gives out.

  • Some problems early, but very nice now - 1999 Toyota Camry

When my Camry was less than a year old, it was in the shop for a 59 day stretch when a defective part had to be replaced. I got a free loaner (Corolla ...) and they paid my two payments, plus gave me the platinum warranty. Since then, its been a pleasure. I for one think there is plenty of power in it considering it is a 4 cylinder. I never have to merge below freeway speeds. Thats good enough for me. The brakes have never been as good as they should be. They work fine, but they shutter and ocassionally grind, and nothing theyve ever done has fixed this. The suspension rattles in the city, and is a bit loose.

  • Great car - 1999 Toyota Camry

Great car. I bought it when it had 168000 miles on it and ran great. I did get new spark plugs, short ram intake and a strut bar, to improve the performance a little. The car never broke down, i had no problems with it. Now it has 192000 miles. It does have a 18gallon gas tank which i found to be a bit too big. but its okay. Now i drive a 350z Overall upgrade from the 99 camry. but the camry did very well the last 2 years.

  • Reliable but Not a Fun Car - 1999 Toyota Camry
    By -

Toyota Camry, is by far one of the most reliable cars, with best performance that I have ever driven. It has never let me down. Unfortunately, it is also not very fun to drive. It is relatively bulky, no fancy designs. It is basically an excellent choice for a family car for a person who does not care about the quality of FUN of driving.

  • not a drivers car - 1999 Toyota Camry

If you like driving, as I do, this is not a car for you. No throttle response, no steering feel, terrible (soft) suspension. Makes me ask "Am I actually driving." I take corners at 40-50 mph, and still no thrill. This is a boring car. Only consider it if you absolutely hate driving or do not like cars at all. If you like driving, or think a car should be responsive and a little sporty, go for the Accord.

  • Great except for Brakes and seats - 1999 Toyota Camry

Im a Realtor and drive constantly. Between 25-30K a year. Love the car except Ive had to replace the brakes about every 10,000 miles. Ive talked with 3 brake stores and all say that is a problem on this year and model. Something to do with the brake caliper not releasing all the way and constantly rubbing. I just take it back every few months for my new pads (under lifetime warranty) new calipers to fix it are around $1,000. Seats for sure and uncomfortable. Terrible adjustments. Other than the brakes I run this car in the ground and it just keeps going.

  • Typical Toyota - 1999 Toyota Camry

Typical Toyota- not incredibly exciting, but well built and cheap to maintain. This is our 2nd Toyota and we plan on a 3rd (lease ending soon). I cant imagine buying another American make after the terrific experience weve had with this Toyota.

  • Great Car - 1999 Toyota Camry

Purchased this car less than a year ago with 120,000 mi. on it. It now has 131,000 mi. It was well maintained by previous owner and it shows. Car rides and feels smooth and tight if you didnt look at the odometer you would think it had half the miles it actually does. Absolutely no problems so far . Gas mileage is just okay...low 20s in commuting traffic and very high 20s on the highway. It rides very smooth and quiet at highway speeds and is very comfy. Acceleration is not bad for a 2.2 L 4 cyl , enough for normal driving situations. It uses less than a quart of oil every 3,000 mi. Overall I am impressed with this car and would recommend it to others.

  • WOW - 1999 Toyota Camry

This is my first used car in over 13 years. The economy killed me and didnt have a choice in getting a used car. I found a 1999 with 266,000 miles on it (2,300) and pampered its entire life. The car looks really nice and has had everything replaced and maintained. It cruises PERFECTLY like a brand new car at 80mph. All power options and AC work perfectly. I was worried I would be driving a beater... NOT THE CASE! Nice car!

  • Overall a great car - 1999 Toyota Camry
    By -

I bought this car back in 06 when I was still in high school, with about 89,000 miles on it. 5 years later and it has 185,000 with no signs of stopping. There have been a couple repairs I have had to do including a costly sensor replacement at the dealership which ran about $1,300. That was back in 09. Then earlier this year, the car wouldnt start and I needed to buy a new air compressor at about $300...All in all a reliable vehicle that has not needed any other major services. The V6 has plenty of power for everyday driving (which here in SW Florida can be both fast-paced and aggravating) and I dont see any reason why this car wont make it to 200k and beyond.
