This Year's Model Updates:

Two new audio systems are available and both include three-in-one ETR/cassette/CD features. Also available are daytime running lights with auto-off. Vintage Red Pearl, Sable Pearl and Woodland Pearl replace Sunfire Red Pearl, Ruby Red and Classic Green Pearl.

Pros:
  • When it comes to people moving, the Camry gets the job done with dependability.
Cons:
  • The suspension is a bit wallowy for our tastes and the new Accord offers more interior space.

  • Boring but good - 1999 Toyota Camry

The camry has been a good car--once we got rid of those General tires that slid into corners and replaced them with some Yokohama Aegis touring tires. My main complaint is the low gas mileage (average around 24) and the paint job. The paint is coming off the front grill and the front bumper. It is flaking off all over the place. Not the quality I expected from Toyota. Mechanically I havent had many problems. The wiper motors seem to have gotten messed up by an ice storm though.

Here is what Ive replaced during my 6 years of ownership: 1.) Circuit board regulating the airflow and AC 2.) Entire Driver window motor assembly (from a Toyota Dealership). 3.) Rust on side of door 4.) Power door locks does not function from time to time. Ive owned over 12+ cars in my lifespan, and this is the 1st car that Ive found myself facing with these items that should have lasted a lot longer.

  • Tranny goes @ 80k? - 1999 Toyota Camry

Im very mad and upset with toyota. this 99 has been seriously nothing but problems. my parents bought the car and didnt notice it was missing a rear seatbelt, the left door has to be slammed in order to close, the brakes go way too often, the suspension sux, and recently $4grand later the transmission went at 81k miles. we had a 98 with no problems and we get a 99 and its a hunk of junk.

  • Dont buy a 1999 Camery - 1999 Toyota Camry

I bought a certified used 1999 Camery XLS 6 months ago. So far Ive had to replace the brakes, fuel injectors, and a value spring. This car has been in the shop 6 times trying to get theses problems fix. After $1,800 in repairs Im going to try and get rid of this car.

  • reliable but ... - 1999 Toyota Camry

It is a reliable car, I guess, since I havent had any problem so far except that recently it is making some spueaking noise from one of the front suspension. However, the seats are extremely uncomfortable for its reputation(the best selling car?). In addition, the handling is far from precise. That makes its cornering highly dangerous sometimes. It gives no fun to drive. It is just a normal family car for people seaking no fun.

  • 1999 Camry endless problems - 1999 Toyota Camry

I purchased this certified car in Dec. 2002. At the beginning it was good. After I had problems with leaking water pump, transmission problems and last huge problem it start lose engine oil. Dealer made some repairs, but it was getting worse and worse. Last time 2 months ago oil level was below lower mark after 1000 miles!!! Dealer hold car for a week, replaced rings, recondition the engine head, bearings etc. Now, after 250 miles it lose 30% of oil. So, I need to go to dealer again.

  • Disappointed - 1999 Toyota Camry

We purchased this Camry new believing it would be a great car for many years. The last two cars we owned, we have for about 10 years each. Beginning within a few months of ownership we have had the following problems: front and rear struts replaced twice, transmission replaced, transmission speed sensor replaced twice, air sensor replaced along with MANY other irritating minor things. Toyota is OFF our list for future purchases! And yes - we have followed the suggested maintenance schedule!

  • Poor reliability - 1999 Toyota Camry

After driving for 3 years+ and around 38K Mileage. I have to fix: 1) Car paints 2) Air flow sensor 3) Air fuel sensor 4) Oxygen sensor 5) Engine control unit and the last 3 part happened in two months after the 36000 mile coverage expired. It cost me R600+ to fix the above problem. I doubt Toyota is that reliable as it claimed.

  • Reliable, but plain grandma car - 1999 Toyota Camry

I drove this car up until a few weeks ago. It was in the family since new. It was very reliable, and never broke down on me until the very end. It lasted until 190K miles, but it probably could have lasted longer if I had spent money to investigate the check engine light. Then one day the head gasket blew and the engine overheated and that was the end of it. Before that, all normal maintenance repairs for its age. A very boring, plain vehicle but if youre looking for a reliable mid size sedan with reasonable acceleration power, this is for you.

  • Reliability went down fast - 1999 Toyota Camry

For the first 4 years of ownership the Camry seemed to hold up well. On the fifth year, things started to fall apart. The rubberized door handle started to separate from the door switch module. Then the radio went out. Then the car started to smoke when starting up in the morning. This was probably due to the slug problem. The oil was changed regularly at 4000 too. Then the metal clip on the gas door broke, keeping the door from opening. Finally the clearcoat on the hood started to chip off. This after doing regular washing and waxing. What did hold up well was the material on the seats and the had no rattles. But that wasnt enough to keep it for another year.
