This Year's Model Updates:

Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
Cons:
  • Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

Everything’s been great except for the weather stripping on the inside door frame, however the dealer corrected the problem on all four doors. There wasnt enough sealant. Please note that dealer had added the extended warranty, credit life and gap insurance without my consent. They also had me at 7.75% and I have great credit. Took the rebate and went thru my credit union for 4.5%

Love this SUV! Bought new. Im still driving 8 yrs later and 120K miles. Only problem was the tail light bulb seems to go every other year which got me a ticket :( Mechanically very sound, well built, still runs like the day I purchased. Ive replaced the water pump/timing belt only due to miles. I get 17-19 mpg in city and 23+ on open highway. I do agree with the others though that the ride can be a bit bumpy, slightly larger tires seems help with that a bit. Cost to own very good at 25K new in 2002, retail today in mint condition is $8-9K. Not bad at all! Debating whether to trade in only due to mileage and mpg.

I had it for 14 months, no single problem, It quick pick up, easy parking, stable in the rainny day, confidence at steering wheel, almost like a sport car. Just love it very much.

I have owned this 4Runner for only a month. I like the feel of quality and I feel safe in it. My only quible is that the gas mileage is not better. Besides that I could drive it all day long!

  • My 3rd one - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

This is my third 4Runner..I have had a 1995, 1999 and now an 2002. They get better and better. Great quality for the money..You get what you pay for..Higher price that avg SUV,but, I will drive this rig for many years with no regret. Getting around 18-19 MPG with an TRD airfilter installed and have enough power to get me up the mtn pass at 90+,so, I am not sure why they are saying that it is way underpowered? Cool rig!

First 10 months with 2002 4-Runner have been exceptional. Fuel mileage on long trips averages at 20.5 mpg travelling at 70-75 mph (where speed limits and conditions permit). Reliability has been perfect in the first 10,000 miles.

  • Why I Buy Toyota - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

This is my 3rd Toyota, following a 2WD pickup and a 98 Tacoma. The great thing with Toyotas is that you get exactly what you expect. They dont have as much power as other brands and theyre not as big on creating a luxury interior, but thats not what I look for in a depreciating asset. Like my other Toyotas, routine maintenance is all I ever have to do and that saves me thousands of $s over friends with other brand vehicles. The only expenses after 76,000 miles are a set of tires, pair of rotors, some oil, and some windshield wipers. It still even has the original brake pads. The vehicle is superbly engineered, handles off- road situations very well, and is great in snow and rain.

Excellent vehicle, very reliable and sturdy. Uncomfortable ride on poor road surfaces which are common in the US. Rather thirsty on the gas, but great engine. Poor seat height adjustment. Cheap stereo, with speakers occasionally shorting. Some noises from front left suspension bushes over bumps since new. Minor brake problems not able to be rectified by dealer in New Orleans, with 2 attempts(Lakeside Toyota). Will purchase other Japanese brand next due to ugliness of new 4Runner model. Overall, however, 2002 4Runner Sport is a great vehicle.

  • Still the Front Runner - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner epitomizes the definition of SUV without sacrificing the comforts of a luxury vehicle. This is my 2nd 4Runner and my 5th Toyota. You cant ever go wrong with Toyota, their quality, reliability, resale, and overall prices are untouchable.
