This Year's Model Updates:

Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
Cons:
  • Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

This vehicle was a great transition form college to our new family. I like the truck like ride and feel of the 4 Runner.

  • Why did I buy a 4Runner? - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

My 4Runner has been more trouble than it is worth. Between faulty stereos (Im up to three now), the paint peeling off the front bumper (which Toyota will not consider a factory defect), and the vibration problems, I am wondering if I just got a lemon or if Toyotas high ranking for quality is nothing but a bunch of hype. I can say that if I dont get these problems resolved soon that I will get rid of that albatross and get something more dependable and mechanically sound.

Really beautiful vehicle. Pulls my large pop-up camper well...plenty of power and never had to release overdrive on our trip to Beavers Bend. Kids love the room in the rear and wife loved the bucket seats. Sound system is great! I really wanted a gps/dvd/nav system but was told it was NOT available. Maybe I can find a wrecked Prius. Also had no fog lights but was told it did by another saleman other than the one I used (beware and ask them to show you).

This is my first SUV and after careful homework, the 4runner came out on top. The quality that Toyota builds into a vehicle is quite impressive. These vehicles are priced on the upper end, but like I always say "pay now or pay later"! The ride is stiff but understandibly so, after all it is a truck. The sport edition is worth the extra money, as it adds the real meaty looks and really makes for an attractive vehicle. This vehicle will surely last even the most rugged of users.

I traded a 2002 Xterra which was junk for this 2002 4Runner. I test drove the then new 2003 4Runner but felt it too big and heavy. Ive not had a single problem with this 4Runner, its built tight, drives great, is quiet, roomy, and wonderful on road trips. I decided it needed more power so I installed a TRD supercharger and some other goodies which really woke it up. Ive dyno tested this 4Runner at 240RWHP. Thats Mustang GT territory and the 4Runner weighs nearly the same. Im thrilled Toyota offers these types of upgrade options. Its an entirely new animal.
