This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's SUV receives minor changes. The most noticeable is the addition of the 2WD Limited to the model lineup. SR5 models receive new interior fabrics.

Pros:
  • Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
Cons:
  • Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

  • Best SUV Ever? - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

I bought this vehicle used with 98,000 miles. It has been a machine! Routine maintenance, tires, brakes, and the timing belt and water pump replaced at 100,000 and 200,000 miles. Electric antenna has gone out twice. This has been hands down the best vehicle I have ever owned. Gas mileage with V-8 has been 18 avg with 23 on interstate. Great off road as well. I will miss this as I am handing it off to my daughter as she heads to college. Im sure it will have a good time too!

Bought used with every possible option. Just love it. Beautiful to look at; fun to drive. Very comfortable; back never gets tired. Good mileage for SUV; over 22 mpg on long hauls from sea-level to over 8000 and at 80+ mph. with a load. Only problem so far is the sectional antenna stopped working. Extremely reliable. My only complaint is that my wife confiscated it on the way home from the dealership, and claims its HER car!

Had this car for about 5 years now and no problems with the car at all. Its at 94K miles and still runs like new.

Great truck, held up in a head on. If I could find my car on a lot or in a driveway somewhere, I would buy it!

  • Just incredible - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

As I approach 300k miles, there is a single, slight rattle coming from the interior of the drivers door. Other than that, this thing is still tight as a drum. I have had to change the power antenna a few times. The drivers side door broke and wouldnt open from the inside at one point, and I got that fixed. Other than that, I have had ZERO mantenance done on the machine other than the Toyota recommended routine maintenance. I cant imagine a higher quality vehicle - and after ten years. I pay $70-$90 for each routine maintenance event, except for major tune-ups and timing belt replacement. My old Ford Bronco II cost $600/yr in brake work alone. 4Runner is an awesome vehicle.

I have been the owner for this car for the past 12 years and have spent less than $1000.00 total in repairs (excluding routine tune-ups, tires and oil changes). This car is amazing, never breaks down. It has 140K miles and is still going strong. Great investment. Very comfortable ride.

  • PA salt killed my frame - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

1997 4Runner SR5 4WD. Bought it 7 yrs old with 103K miles. Replaced antisway bar link a year later and noticed a lot of new frame surface rust. 5 years since i bought it the frame rusted through. What a shame, it was a typical strong, solid Toyota. It would have run for 100K or more no problem.

bought my 97 SR5 as a demo with 20k on it. It has been the most reliable car ever. I think the late 90s was a time when Japan and Toyota in particular decided to overtake GM and Ford in market share and the chose product quality as their method of attack. Essentially this car is the antithesis of a GM or Ford. It never breaks. I have replaced the battery brakes and tires and a few worn out mechanisms like the ignition switch and bulbs but everything else remains in perfect working order and starts every single time I turn it over. I just hit 225k and am handing the keys to my 16 year old daughter who refuses to drive anything else because she grew up in this vehicle.

I bought my first 4Runner used, a 1997 SR5 4x4. Ive had about a dozen vehicles (none Toyotas) in my lifetime and wish I had bought a 4Runner sooner. I am now shopping for another one, for my daughter whos in college. Shes going to flip out -- she loves ours.
