This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's SUV receives minor changes. The most noticeable is the addition of the 2WD Limited to the model lineup. SR5 models receive new interior fabrics.

Pros:
  • Great looks and ground-pounding performance make the 4Runner an ideal choice for people who love the great outdoors as well as those who just want to look like they do.
Cons:
  • Steep price and choppy highway ride temper our enthusiasm for this otherwise outstanding truck.

  • Does whatever I ask of it. - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

I bought my 4Runner a little over a year ago with 111,000 miles and it was wrecked. I repaired the damage, installed a small lift, larger tires an HD hitch and electric brake controller. I bi-weekly haul 1-2 tons on my tandem axle trailer with very little problem. My 4Runner is a manual trans so I make the most of the power it has. I also off road it harder than one should their daily driver but this little rig is extremely capable and fun to trail run with the family. I also having been driving more lately putting on 1500-2000 last month and been getting 19 mpg consistently. I have nothing but good things to say about my beat up little 4Runner-wait one negative needs more headroom!!

I owned this car before. You will not be dissapointed. By far the best feature is a trunk window that goes all the way down automatically. I now own a 02 Lexus RX300, but nothing will ever beat the feeling and joy I had driving the 97 Runner..

  • Worst 4X4 Ever! - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

This thing is awful. Your feet stick straight out in front of you, putting your legs to sleep in the front seat, your knees are in your nose in the rear seat. Its a gutless wonder, with no power. In the shop all the time for piddlin little things like wrinkling rubber on the running boards, peeling paint, sticking sunroof, you know Toyota stuff. And the parts are outrageous! A new ignition tumbler cost me $120 bucks! Its like driving a two story house down the highway - tippy around corners. Its a wonder my wife hasnt rolled it. Its a pig in the woods - no diff locks=stuck lots. And be careful if you take it off road, its fragile. Im going with a Suburban next.

We bought this car brank new in 1997 and have 75K miles, still drives like brand new. Never had any problems, just routine maintanance. I hate to get a new car but I need a third seat! I wish the new 4runner had a third seat.

  • Cupholder Explanation For Everybody!!! - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Okay, I do not, and have not ever owned a 4Runner, although I hope to very soon. I took my spring break trip to Japan, and had always seen the reviews on 4Runners complaining about the cupholder placement. The reason they put it there is to keep drinks cold in the hot months by using the AC to cool it. This is VERY standard in Japan, nearly all vehicles have this set up. True, it may make it take longer to cool the cabin, but who likes piss-warm drinks in July?

Just bought this truck a week ago and I love it. Was considering a 2002 Xterra, but the fact that the rear window goes down had me sold. Limited is great, love the factory chromes.

I decided to sell my Mustang to get something I could drive 30,000 miles or more per year in snowy/rainy weather. I bought a 4Runner & loved it! It was fun to drive in all seasons; it was very reliable for my long commute; the highway visibility was SO much better than in my Mustang. In the snow, it was wonderful. I think there was one occasion all winter where I slid on an icy bridge, but overall, the push- button 4WD is great. Sadly, my 4Runner was recently totaled in an accident- not my fault. I plan to buy another one as soon as possible & I highly recommend a 4x4 LTD 4Runner to anyone who is looking for a sharp, reliable, fun SUV.

  • A Great Buy - 1997 Toyota 4Runner

I purchased this 4Runner on eBay. I then flew to California to pick it up and drove it back to Chicago! At the time of purchase it had 242400(!) miles but the truck drove well and it had no problem crossing the continent at the average speed of 75 mph. The one-touch 4WD is very neat but havent got chance to test its limit. Cant wait for the Chicago snow. The engine at below 70 mph is very quiet and strong. But the wind noise is very interfering. CD down, sun roof does not open, but antenna goes up and down. A/C cold. 3 weeks, so far as good! Wait for my follow-up reviews every year! I am going to test out how many miles can my 4Runner really go before it collapses.
