This Year's Model Updates:

Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
Cons:
  • Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

I have enjoyed driving my 4 Runner. I had a Toyota Camry before I purchased the 4 Runner. I like how it handles in all weather conditions.

  • 02 4Runner a sweet deal - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Bought new from my local dealer in March 2002. The vehicle is the SE model and has been a real value. This was the last year Toyota built the 4Runner for American sales solely in Japan. That is a real plus! Great in the snow and fun to drive on vacation. Overall a great value and would do it over again.

  • 2002 Toyo 4Runner SR5 - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

This is the third Toyota we have owned and we cant say enough good things about them. Our new 4Runner is a good mix of rugged practicality and luxury (sunroof, CD, air conditioner...). We recently drove 5000 miles across the country in it and found it to be very comfortable on the long haul. It has plenty of room for all of our stuff and handles a trailer pretty well (a little more oomph wouldnt hurt on the hills). The gas mileage has been better than expected, we are now getting 20-22 mpg with it. I am looking forward to a long and happy relationship with this car.

  • 4Runner.....one great car - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I got a 2002 4Runner SR5 4WD Sport Edition and I love it. The ride is trucklike and bumpy over washboard surfaces but the 4Runner can take almost anything you throw at it. The engine is smooth but it will leave you wanting more horses(one of the only faults). The braking is exceptional plus the traction and stability control helps me stay firmly on the road in bad conditions. The inside and outside styling is superb and in my opinion it is the best looking SUV on the market. Average fuel economy for an older SUV about 17-21 in my experiance.

  • Fun to drive - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I love this vehicle - its reliable, both maintenance and durability wise. They could have done a little bit better with mpg and the horsepower. I think those are really the two major areas it was lacking in, but other than that I think its a great car just like the rest of the models Toyota makes. Now the interior... I accept its a little outdated but its not that bad; they should had put a better stereo system on it. Exterior wise I think Toyota did a great job.

  • Mechanically excellent "but" - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

4runners have an excellent rep. If you buy one and dont need 4wd, whats the purpose? We drive this car on the beach and in snow. Absolutely no problem, never. == (Cont). to get out of 4wd low. I have the six cylinder and it is a good engine around town or down the road. In my opinion it lacks a little power. If you have 4 men and bags and you want to engage highway traffic you need to stomp on it. I would not trailer anything heavy unless it is very local travel. The V8 maybe be a better option you be the judge. The seat is good if you are a normal size man, for me it doesnt provide enough support in the right places for a LONG trip. The AM radio is terrible - static.

  • Not for gravel roads - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

We purchased this vehicle because we live in the mountains and need a lot of ground clearance and off road handling. The only area in which this car has disappointed me is in its off road handling, which unfortunately in our situation, is a huge chunk of time. When we purchased this vehicle we were aware of its "truck like chassis" but this car is downright scary to drive on our gravel (sometime washboard) roads. Im not going any faster than 20-25 miles per hour, usually less. This car fish tails or skids over the slightest washboard. I have talked to other people in this area with the same problem.

  • New in 99, Bought again in 02 - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Toyotas 4-Runner is an outstanding vehicle. I leased a new limited in 1999; the ONLY thing I did to this vehicle was change the oil and rotate the tires. I did not have a single problem. The ride is smooth, quiet, and safe. I love sitting up high to see over traffic. Most of all, the reliability/dependability is first class. I HIGHLY recommend a Toyota 4-Runner!
