This Year's Model Updates:

Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.

Pros:
  • Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
Cons:
  • Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

The truck is nice very nice. Ive had it for almost 3 months now and Im happy with it. My friends love it, my parents love it, people who I dont even know love it. It seems like everyone likes this SUV. At almost 4000 miles on it, it still has the new car smell. It rides great, sounds great and just is a great all around SUV. I had an 89 Camry before this and this was a great little car and I expect this new Toyota to be a great car as well. Well see as the months and years go by how it turns out.

  • Best SUV ever - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

My 4Runner is 6 yrs. old and has 162,000 miles on it, and it still purrs like a kitten. Absolutely the best SUV I have ever owned. Reliable beyond expectations, decent gas mileage for an SUV, comfortable ride, very utilitarian. I love the design, and wish they hadnt changed it so much in 03. I hope to own it another 6 yrs. or more!!

  • Not Much to Improve - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

I just bought my 2002 SR5 2WD two weeks ago and I really dig it! Despite all of the belly-aching over the lack of horsepower by many, it really is not too bad. Its much faster than the Mitsu Montero Sport (3.5 liter - 200 HP) that I test drove (I can walk faster - on my hands)! I like the interior layout and I love the exterior. Its a bit dated, but still a "looker" nonetheless. Im hoping the new 4Runner looks like a Highlander, so I wont be tempted to trade in.

This is a great SUV. I bought it brand new with only 3 miles on it. So now a year later w/ 22K miles it still runs just as good when I drove it off of the dealers lot. This I have to say is one of the best looking SUVs that is on the road. Every where I go I get nothing but compliments on it. It drives great, rides great, everything is great. Overall a BEST pick.

I recommend this vehicle to ALL! Vehicle is a dependable truck that I drove up to 96,500 miles and had not a single issue with. The V6 engine had beautiful sound as Id step into it on the freeway.

This is my second Toyota 4Runner LTD 4WD and I am planning on getting another this year. Handling is outstanding. Fixtures and fittings excellent. Reliability is outstanding. Not had 1 problem with either of mine - 1999 or 2002.

  • AS A LANDCRUISER OWNER.... - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

THIS IS OUR THIRD TOYOTA. OUR FIRST WAS THE 91 PREVIA LE, WHICH WE PURCHASED NEW AND TRADED FOR OUR 2002 4RUNNER. WE STILL HAVE OUR 92 LANDCRUISER, AND ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS OF THAT VEHICLE. THE 4RUNNER REMINDS US OF THE LANDCRUISER, BUT SINCE MY WIFE DIDNT WANT SUCH A CAVERNOUS SUV, BUT DID WANT TO SIT UP TALL, SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE 4RUNNER. COMPARED TO THE LANDCRUISER, THE 4RUNNER IS MORE FUN TO DRIVE, EASIER TO PARK, AND HAS BETTER PICK-UP. WE FIND THE INTERIOR DESIGN JUST FINE, IF NOT UTILITARIAN. ALL IN ALL, THE 4RUNNER PROVIDES EVERYTHING WE NEED IN AN SUV, INCLUDING THAT ALL- IMPORTANT TOYOTA RELIABILITY, SAFETY AND RESALE VALUE.

  • My 2nd 4runner - 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Ive owned 2 4runners now and I believe they are the best SUVs made. My 1990 had 262000 hard miles on it when I sold it, and was still running fine. Ive had the 2002 for over a year now, and its even better than my old one. It pulls my boat like it isnt even there, and does great in the snow. I would highly recommend a 4runner to anyone wanting a solid SUV.
