Overview & Reviews
The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.
- Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
- These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

Great vehicle, but ours not as reliable as some - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By RobS - January 7 - 11:00 pmMaybe our 1999 4Runner 4x4 was built on a Friday, but we have had a few repairs that we didnt expect, given the reliability rating it gets. Starter motor, Oxygen and Mass Air Sensors, and starter failed at under 100K miles, a complete failure of a lower ball joint in the front end, rear axle seals leaked (then leaked again after dealer repaired them, just after warranty of course), Drivers side Master Switch for power windows went out, then after living with it for a couple years, started working again. Front Drivers Seat Belt Tensioner springs are about shot, so the seat belt doesnt retract most of the time. Water pump went out at 165K, even though we replaced it at 90K when we had the timing belt replaced as part of scheduled maintenance. At the same time, second starter went out, now on #3. The V6 has never made great power, but is OK. So far, its been reliable and doesnt burn any oil, and get around 20 MPG on the highway, which isnt bad for a 4x4. We did have to have the Valve Cover Gasket replaced. Some of the plastic covers on seat adjustment levers, seat belt return, are breaking. At least one of the 12V power ports should be On if the ignition is off. Seats could be a little bigger, but the vehicle is narrow, so no fault really. Controls are well thought out, and dash layout is good (could use full instrumentation for Oil and Alternator). One thing I smile about driving in the city every day is great turning radius, and overall maneuverability for a SUV, another is the Power Rear Window (which NO OTHER small SUV has)...our dog especially loves it! The repairs weve had to make are, in my mind, worth the overall experience of owning our 4Runner. Its a nice looking vehicle, offroads well (fire roads and unimproved logging roads), drives responsively in the city. It could have more room, but it drives and parks easily in congested San Francisco, so the tradeoff is OK.

Its a Toyota - What do you expect... - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Jataga - November 21 - 2:00 amI have owned my 4Runner for a little over 4 years now and am COMPLETELY satisfied. I must say it is a GREAT SUV to own. The reason why I purchased it was b/c of reliability and looks! I have taken mine off road numerous times in very difficult terrain and with the ground clearance and articulation this SUV has, it is awesome. I put an average of 25,000 miles a year on mine and it is running just as good at 100,000 miles as it was at 1,000 miles. I love it and would definitely buy another one!

Best all around - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By M.FREEMAN - November 9 - 10:00 amI have 240,0000 mi. On my 4runner. I replaced a few parts but saved money by doing my own repairs. Plenty of room inside for my gear and just enough power to tow my boat. Does well in the snow doesnt in the mud. Drive it hard and use it for commuting. Motor still runs smooth w/no oil leaks. I always loved the look of this generation.

Great Vehicle!! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Steakbelly - August 11 - 2:00 amThis 4Runner is a blast to drive! An incredibly smooth ride, and of all the 99s, 2000s and 2001s I test drove (Pathfinders, Explorers and this 4Runner), this was BY-FAR the best driving car. Managed to get a FULL warranty on this 99, even though it had a lot of milage (85K). Looking forward to years of enjoyment with this SUV!

Awesome truck! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By bl - July 31 - 1:40 amBought it used in 2004. Its already been 3 years/40000 miles - not a single problem so far. Ride may seem a little rough to some people, but its a trade-off for a great off-road performance

Real SUV - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By TDM - July 28 - 10:00 amIt took me a while to see beyond the commercials on TV. Once I did that, I found that consumers reviews on the Internet are the best source of information. If you read them you see that Toyota beats ANY american car in quality and reliability. As for the SUV, almost all of them are now just minivans. Not so with Toyota. My 4Runner has a simple interior but is very comfortable. The engine runs perfectly and I had no problems. The 4X4 runs great and you can choose from 2WD, 4WD High for a rainy day, 4WD Low for serious off-roading and hub locking for special situations. The mileage is just as specified (16/19 mpg) which is good enough for its class.
