Overview & Reviews
Not much has changed this year for Toyota's truck-based 4Runner SUV. The SR5's optional Sport package has gained a front skid plate, floor mats and new tube step-up bars (optional). Handsome 15-inch alloy wheels are now standard, there's a new chrome package available, and Golden Pearl has been added to the Limited's selection of exterior colors.
- Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard stability and traction control, brake assist system.
- Hard to climb into and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

Perfect SUV for your needs - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By adman102 - November 13 - 10:00 amAfter about three weeks and 1000 miles with this SUV, Im very impressed! Gas mileage has been in the lower 20s, impressive for an SUV. Interior and exterior fit and finish is excellent. It pulls a 3,500 lb. boat very well. Im 63" and leg room is adequate, as is head and shoulder room. The 4Runner steers and handles tightly, almost car like. So far, this is the great vehicle its been touted to be! It has all the features I wanted without some I didnt.

Not sure - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By dbail - September 15 - 10:53 pmI bought this on Halloween because I had read all the great reviews. Im looking forward to the reliability that everyone raves about but I do have some issues with it. The seats are extremely uncomfortable. There is a lumbar support bar that sits in the middle of my back and causes my legs to cramp. I had to pull it out during a long trip. Also, the cruise control is awkward over 70 miles an hour. If there is even the slightest hill the rpm sky rocket in order to keep the speed. Not a smooth transition. I love the automatic rear window for groceries and its a 4WD machine. The antenna has already broken but not worried about it. Differential lock a huge plus. Great vehicle horrible seats.

Ho Hum Reliable - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By Rick - September 14 - 10:06 amBought the 2002 2WD 4Runner based on reliablity history of Toyota. Nothing spectacular after 52,000 miles. Always starts, no major repairs - except the automatic radio antenna broke and needs to be repaired someday. Car is holding up well. Only regret is that I didnt buy a 4WD and sunroof, both would make the car better for me. Drives/handles like a truck - not the smoothest ride. Good visibility, no blind spots. Somewhat noisy on the road - even with new tires. Sometimes, Id prefer to have a fun car with some pep, but my plan was to keep the 4Runner until I get to 200,000 miles.

3rd Gen 4Runner - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By John - August 13 - 11:43 pmIMHO... 4Runners are the best mid sized SUV on the road. My 3rd generation 4Runner has noticably more power and creature comforts. The only prob Ive noticed (hence my build quality descrepancy)is the door seals. Drivers and rear passenger molding does not fit right. Local dealer just shrugs and says I can get a new set of molding for more than Im willing to pay. Oh well... great truck.. just wish Id held out for 4X4.

Love this truck!!! - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By 4runner_momma - May 1 - 10:50 amI LOVE this truck! Toyota builds the best vehicles on the road and my 4Runner is no exception. It gets me where I need to go, keeps my kid safe, and does all this without asking anything in return of me except regular maintenance, and new tires! I do wish it has a few more creature comforts...softer chairs (mine are leather), and latch restraints for the car seat, but all of this is addressed on the next generation. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this truck, and I am sure my daughter (9 mo. old) will be driving this when she turns 16! It will need a new paint job by then though...

AWESOME - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
By HJKL - April 10 - 2:00 amAWESOME SUV. RIDES SMOOTH, ALONG WITH GREAT LOOKS, QUICK TAKE OFF. NEEDS A LITTLE MORE HP. I AM NOT REAL BIG ON 3RD ROW SEATS. IT SEATS 5, ANYMORE AND YOU SHOULD GO AHEAD AND GET A FULL SIZE.
