Overview & Reviews
The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.
- Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
- These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

Love My 4Runner Sport Edition - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Paul Anderson - December 12 - 10:00 amMy wife and I have had our 1999 4Runner SR5 Sport Edition for 4 years. It has been an absolutely flawless vehicle. I dont know who J.D. Powers is talking too to give it such poor reliability ratings. The only thing our 4Runner has been in the shop for is its normal oil changes every 6,000 miles. The fuel mileage averages around 20 mpg, which is fabulous for a 6 cylinder SUV that sees mostly city driving. Our next SUV will most definitely be a Toyota, probably a Sequoia due to the larger size.

Love It Already - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By H Coffey - September 4 - 2:50 amJust bought my 4 Runner SR5 4wd a couple of weeks ago but now drive it all the time everywhere. Friends are astonished that this is a ten (10) year old vehicle! It has logged 115,000 miles in Canada and was used all year in all weather conditions. Granted the first owners took good care of it but I seen many GMs, Fords and Nissans that were babied but notwithstanding the care, still turned to junk. Matter of fact I previously owned an Explorer and Pathfinder. The SR5s interior is like new and except for a few minor wee dents the exterior and black paint are perfect! The 16 inch alloy wheels have some very minor corrosion but way less than one would expect for enduring ten winters.

Bought new - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Jim Z - April 29 - 1:10 pmIve owned this vehicle for nine years and 165,000 miles so far. The only habitual problem with this truck are its front disks - they warp much too quickly (on third set). I, also, get around 18 mpg in mixed driving (20 on highway trips), but this vehicle is made for off-roading so its suspension and drive train are beefy. Handles snow great (4WD), but squirrelly in rain (2WD). Very tough truck. My wife was in an accident, ended up going down an embankment, hitting a tree and bending the frame. Not hurt. Through it into 4WD, drove back up the hill and drove home. You can add a lot of gear in back without throwing off its handling. Very comfortable on trips. Well designed dash and console.

Spontaneous Combustion - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Houston, TX - April 22 - 1:10 pmI bought this car new and took great care of it. With 85K miles on it, an electrical fire started behind the dashboard (probably inside the instrument cluster) causing massive damage. All wiring was factory and no work had been done on the electrical system. Otherwise I really enjoyed the car until it caught fire on me.

Reliable SUV - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Erica B - March 7 - 2:00 am4Runner is a beautiful car. Its enough room for five people, but small enough to take places without it being a hassle, in comparison to these oversized SUVS such as the Expedition or Suburban.

4Runner 4work and 4play - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
By Roger - February 16 - 7:23 amI bought my 4Runner used in 01. I had a field service job for the last 4 years that required I use my own vehicle, so Ive spent a lot of time in it, in all kinds of weather. It now has 162,000 miles, and going strong. Outside of normal maintenance items, only failures Ive had is the starter and Mass Air Flow sensor. The brakes didnt have to be replaced until 125,000 miles. I love the comfortable ride on the road and off. Ive done some camping/fishing trips in Canada on some pretty rough roads, and it handled them with ease. Ive heard that its not uncommon for 4Runners to reach 250,000 without major overhauls, planning on keeping it as long as it keeps running.
