This Year's Model Updates:

Two new models, the H6-3.0 L.L.Bean Edition and the H6-3.0 VDC, both featuring a more-powerful 3.0-liter engine, join the happy Outback family.

Pros:
  • The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt, well-appointed interior.
Cons:
  • Questionable exterior styling, still not an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability.

While this car is great in snow and rock solid in a driving rain it has been a maintenance nightmare. We think it was built late on a Friday afternoon. Within hours of taking delivery the car wouldnt start. Bad fuel injectors. Within two months, bad brake rotors. Drivers door has never closed correctly without slamming it. New clutch within 24K miles... told Subaru clutches dont last long (wife asked if we they could install a Honda clutch instead - our accord clutch lasted until 75K....). Another new clutch at 45K. Blown tranny at 102K and now blown head gasket at 105K. Were done with Subaru.

Just past the 1 year mark with my vdc. overall it is fun. the engine is great- very strong and quick. handling is also great especially in bad weather. stereo sounds great although the cd player skipped and was replaced. the only downside is the brakes. backing up and applying the brakes sounds like they are falling off. a shim kit has helped alittle. the rotors needed to be ground down because they were uneven. generally they are mushy and do not instill confidence.

Love this car. Only faults were two recalls and brakes had to be done before their time but half cost was covered by the warranty.

  • Great car and an attention-getter - 2001 Subaru Outback

I drive this car all of the time. I sell insurance; so I am on the road alot. This is one smooth running car. I will be driving over eighty without even noticing it if I am not carefull. i wish that it was a little bit faster from a dead stop, but it such a good running car on the highway. My back does not hurt over long distances with this car as it has with other vehicles. I nearly always get lots of attention when I am in this car. It is a rare car and looks great. People of all ages will stare at it or say something good about it. My first trip to Florida got me 30 MPG on the highway when I set the cruise at the speed limit. Great Car!

THIS CAR I THINK IS THE BEST CAR ON THE ROAD,(APART FROM THE IMPREZA WRX) I DONT THINK IT LOOKS AS GOOD AS THE IMPREZA WRX, THE ONE I DROVE DIDNT HAVE THE GRILL ON THE BONNET WHICH WAS A DISSAPOINTMENT BUT THE POWER IS THERE! ALTHOUGH ITS A BIG CAR IT HANDLES LIKE A TRUE SMALL SPORTS CAR!

Drives great in snow and ice but has had multiple mechanical problems including:Throttle problems, twice, accelerating suddenly and not wanting to gear down, a recall due to the cruise control,a second recall for some undercarriage problem that could have caused serious breakdown, two brake jobs and rotor broblems, sticking lift gate and now computer problems and a host of minor gliches that required a day here and there in the shop. I dread to think what is next and the car just turned three this December!!!.

My daughter wanted to buy my 2001 Subaru. I told her "over my dead body" and I meant it literally. I have had my share of unreliable transportation over the years, one cars transmission even gave up, when we were driving it out of a showroom. When we went looking for a new car (this car was a demo so it was practically new), my husband (who takes care of our finances) almost didnt buy it. The salesman wasnt ready to budge another 100 dollars off. If we would have walked away from this car, I would have been heart broken. It is now 2008 and I think it has been in the garage maybe 4 times. I can depend on it day after day to get me to work, shopping, wherever. I will never take it for granted.

I like the car and would consider buying another. Good MPG, ride, reliability.

  • 120k and still a great car - 2001 Subaru Outback

We now have 120k on our Suby. Yes, we had to replace head gaskets at 100k miles. And we had a fuel pump go at 105k, but since then our car has been bullet proof, as it was before these problems. It is regularly used to go up into the mountains and for a brief period I towed a trailer and go kart with it. This is my wifes car and while I would appreciate better gear ratio and spacing, she loves driving it. Seven years old and still going strong. My fourth Suby and not my last.

Good vehicle, no problems other than interior design issues. Im not crazy about the fact that you need to use high octane fuel, I assumed all economy cars used regular - oops! The seat heater toggle switch gets turned on accidentally, not so much a problem in the winter, but when its already warm its difficult to cool a warm seat that you are sitting on. The window switches are awkward; Im forever opening the back windows when my intention is to open the front. The drink holders are placed too far back, the driver has to look away from the road to replace a drink in the holder. The phone charger goes off when the vehicle isnt running; Im not crazy about that idea. Everything else is GREAT.
