This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru has expanded the availability of its new 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine to the Outback sedan. The result is two additional sedan trim levels: 3.0-H6 and 3.0-H6 VDC. Minor upgrades to all trim levels this year include a dome light off-delay, an ignition switch illumination ring and wood grain-patterned door switch trim. Cars with the Vehicle Dynamics Control system now have a button to turn the system off, and sedans receive an internal trunk release. The automatic climate control system is upgraded with an air filtration system.

Pros:
  • The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt, well-appointed interior.
Cons:
  • Not as capable as an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability, upscale models are expensive.

Currently we only have 6000 miles on the car, and so far it is very enjoyable. The ride is very smooth and sure.

  • 2002 Outback Wagon - 2002 Subaru Outback

After twenty-six months, this wagon is as much fun to drive as it was when purchased. It is comfortable, economical to operate, and handles wellin any weather and on any surface. Cruising at highway speeds all day is noproblem, but it really stands out duringa major snow storm. We look forward to many more years with this vehicle and will very likely belooking for another Outback Wagon when its time to trade.

  • Started Out Great Then Money Pit - 2002 Subaru Outback

This was our second outback. We bought a 3.0h6 vdc used. It was the regional Subaru reps car and came fully loaded with everything including the McIntosh stereo. For 4 years we hauled 2 kids and a 80 lb dog all over Colorado. The car was great until it hit 100,000 miles. After that it was nonstop maintenance. A big problem was the car burned through brakes. Then the car began leaking oil. Lots of oil! The biggest problem was when we would go up a hill the vdc off light would come on then the engine would overheat. Two Subaru dealers could not find the problem. They overhauled the entire cooling system at great expense. Head gaskets were fine. We finally gave up and traded it in.

  • Our 5th Subaru - 2002 Subaru Outback

I love my Black & Gold 3.0 AWD Outback Sedan! Its fun to drive, and handles EXTREMELY well in snow and rain. Its the most comfortable car Ive ever driven for long trips. 600-700 miles in a day, and I still feel great at the end of the days drive. I have only one complaint that my Service Department has no answer -- the heating/cooling system. Seems theres no happy medium for it. Hopefully Subaru will come up with a fix soon! Weve been a Subaru family for a long time. I drove a 2000 Outback Sedan before getting the 2002, with the bigger engine. Glad I made the upgrade, except -- give me my old air conditioner/heater!!!

  • Great Car!...Needs a Tranny - 2002 Subaru Outback
    By -

This car is very nice. I have owned many Subarus and this car is not like any of them. Quiet, smooth, comfortable, ergonomic. What a great engine the 3.0 H-6 is! Its just too bad that it doesnt have a better Automatic transmission. Needs a 5 speed Auto with closer gearing or a manual tranny would be nice. Overall a great car though.

  • Problems - 2002 Subaru Outback
    By -

We have had too many problems with this car. When applying brakes the steering wheel will shimmy. This only happens when brakes are warm. The air conditioner has quit twice. The grill over the fog light fell off. The windshield has cracked twice in the same place. Dealer has tried to fix problems. It is back at a dealer now for another attempt at fixing.

  • BAD CAR - 2002 Subaru Outback

Bad clutch shudder, steering vibration, mushy brakes

  • Not impressed - 2002 Subaru Outback
    By -

We bought it for the AWD for VT winters & mud season. Performs well in the elements but not an enjoyable ride otherwise. The clutch is difficult and the interior seating is small & narrow. Have had to replace the breaks several times. Check engine light comes on frequently. Repairs have gotten expensive - one of the worst cars Ive owned. I miss my Honda!!
