Overview & Reviews
Two new models, the H6-3.0 L.L.Bean Edition and the H6-3.0 VDC, both featuring a more-powerful 3.0-liter engine, join the happy Outback family.
- The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt, well-appointed interior.
- Questionable exterior styling, still not an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability.

Great Car - 2001 Subaru Outback
By Len - February 12 - 5:53 pmOther than a very poor heated seat button location the car is great. This car when new would be overpriced but used is a great value.

01 Subaru Outback wagon - 2001 Subaru Outback
By Larry Leidecker - December 11 - 2:00 amOverall, this is an extremely reliable and capable vehicle. I bought it new and have had it back for a recall to have the underside undercoated. Other than that, an engine light came on and so a sensor was replaced under warranty. Very good car overall, especially in the snow.

Incredibly reliable - 2001 Subaru Outback
By msn - October 18 - 4:16 pmI bought my Outback Wagon new and after 90,000 miles I can say it is the most reliable car Ive ever owned. I replaced the clutch at 80,000 miles and apart from routine maintenance (oil changes, wiper blades, headlight bulb, tire rotation, new battery at around 60,000 miles) that has been it. Even the original Wilderness tires did not need replacing until 75,000 miles.

2001 Outback Sedan - 2001 Subaru Outback
By MartyJ - August 8 - 2:00 amExcellent road handling in dry, wet and snow conditions. However, anti lock brakes take longer to stop on ice. The ride is so smooth, you can be doing 80 mph and it feels like you are doing 50. I had to monitor my speed closely during the first few months to keep myself from speeding. I like the fact that you dont have to push a button to shift gears. Gear shifting is like a manual transmission (side to side). Moonroof has a shade to cover the glass so street lamps dont distract you at night.

Happy 1st Time Owner - 2001 Subaru Outback
By Belinda Tuneblom - May 11 - 2:00 amThis is our first Subaru and my Husband and I are very pleased with it. We are skiers and the car is great for our ski tirps up to Vermont. We now have a baby boy and feel that the car is more than adequate for our growing family. I do however, wish there was more room between the back and front seats. It is a bit tight for the driver with a rear facing infant seat in the back seat. We like the racks on top due to the fact that our skis will now have to ride on the roof to make room for our son. Being a 4 cyl, it does lack a little power on uphill excelleration but this is something we can live with.

Costly to maintain - 2001 Subaru Outback
By First and last - May 5 - 12:03 amApparently all of those who told me to buy a Subaru because "youll never have any problems" never owned a 2001 Outback. Granted, I did buy it when it was 4years old and had 100K miles on the clock, but it was fun to drive and looked great. The check engine light has been on more that its been off: O2 sensors, catalytic converter, knock sensor have all been replaced and yet the light is still on. Brakes seem to wear out quickly and then there were the head gaskets to be replaced. This one has needed more expensive maintenance than any of the other cars Ive owned. But its still fun to drive and the drivers seat is even more comfortable now that my wallet isnt as fat.

Great all rounder, with no reliability - 2001 Subaru Outback
By ABB - April 25 - 10:00 amMy first new car. Had no problems at all until 36K. Engine overheated and ruined it. It was fixed under warranty. Then again at 50K car was leaking lots of coolant. Turned out to be the water pump, but again fixed under warranty. Other than reliability, its an overall decent car. Though a bit underpowered, its still fun to drive in all conditions. Very smooth and quiet ride as well. Good clearance for off-roading, but terrible approach angle. With everything fixed, I hope it will take me upto 200K.

Most Pleased - 2001 Subaru Outback
By carnell - April 5 - 7:30 pmThe two improvements that I would appreciate are; a front seat arm rest to avoid fatigue on long trips - the 10 and 2 o,clock hand positions are very tiring, and directional signal display as a flashing bar in the exterior mirrors for increased safety. Best car in my 46 years of driving.
