This Year's Model Updates:

A truck-based mini-SUV, the athletic new Xterra competes with several smaller vehicles built on car platforms.

Pros:
  • Rugged looks and capability to match, excellent brakes, lots of room inside, standard ABS.
Cons:
  • Based on a truck, it steers like a truck (read: numb).

I got bored with this truck fast. Its cool looking, and can take you off road, but dont expect anything to happen when you step on the gas.

The most surprising element about the Xterra is the smooth ride. Most SUVs can be bumpy but Nissan builds the Xterra with rubber mounts around the frame and what a difference that makes. The Xterra is high up, higher than the Grand Cherokee and the standard runner boards makes it feel and look more rugged.

I love my Xterra. It has 100,000 miles and I have only had to change the tires, brakes and a couple belts. Nothing huge considering the mileage.

I purchased this vehicle with 70,000 miles on it and I have taken it all over the great outdoors and it is more fun than any other vehicle I have ever owned.

  • My 2000 Xterra SE 3.3 liter V6 - 2000 Nissan Xterra

I bought this car almost two years ago and have put 15,000 miles on it. It is great in snow and ice in 4 wheel drive mode. Easy to shift from 2 to 4 wheel drive system. The 3.3 liter V6 is adequate, not fast, but you dont get an SUV for speed. Valve gaskets had to be replaced at 154K. Only complaints; no dashboard clock and dashboard instruments are very dark. On a sunny day if youre wearing sunglasses you cant read them unless dashboard lights are turned on. Vehicle is very rugged. I actually think this 1st generation Xterra looks nicer than the 2nd generation. 4 full doors and great visibility make it more practical than the FJ Cruiser. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

Recently took my Xterra out to Death Valley and it performed great! Took it on an 86 mi. washboard dirt road over a mountain range and it performed like a winner! Plenty of power and torque at lower speeds and for towing. My Xterra has proven very reliable and I like its rugged good looks. Gas mileage could use a little boost as I am only averaging about 17 - 18MPG. I would consider buying another, but I think this ones going to be around for a while.

I purchased this vehicle with 50k on it. It has been the most fun to drive vehicle Ive ever owned. It has a much better feel off road and on than my previous explorer. It still feels tighter than my explorer did when it was new.

  • Almost 5 Years and Still Running - 2000 Nissan Xterra

July 2004 will be my 5-year anniversary of owning my 2000 Xterra XE 4WD V6. I am on my 3rd set of front brakes and original rear brakes. I replaced the stock BF Goodrich Long Trails at about 65,000 miles with Goodyear Forteras. I replaced the battery around the same time and have just recently noticed the upper radiator hose has been leaking coolant under pressure. The body still looks good although the plastic has faded over the years. The interior still looks great. Im averaging around 14- 15 MPG. Overall I’m very pleased but would not buy another Xterra just because I don’t use or need it’s off road capability.
