This Year's Model Updates:

A truck-based mini-SUV, the athletic new Xterra competes with several smaller vehicles built on car platforms.

Pros:
  • Rugged looks and capability to match, excellent brakes, lots of room inside, standard ABS.
Cons:
  • Based on a truck, it steers like a truck (read: numb).

and i have to say i believe you are supposed to have your airbags serviced every so often so people whos airbags didnt go off could have done that. probly a good thing to do for all late model vehicles

I purchased my 2000 Xterra one month after they first hit the streets (July 1999). So I probably have one of the most driven Xterras out there (About 48,000 miles). Its been a great vehicle. No problems what so ever. I love it!

I was initially not too impressed with my purchase. However, after having it over 2 years, I have come to appreicate and like this extremely reliable, if not slightly underpowered, SUV.

Bought new in 2000, before wife and kid. Most reliable ever, currently 180k miles. Need only routine maintenace. No fancy bells and whisles, just a simple SUV that can take on almost anything. However, with another kid on the way, I may finally have to part with it.

Now this is an SUV! From the first day I saw the XTerra, I knew that was the SUV I wanted and could easily afford. The trucks been great. I live in the mountains and the XTerras made my life so much easier. Mudslide? What mudslide? Snow? No problem. Could use a bit more power to climb the hills, but turning off the overdrive gives continued power and saves the brakes on the downhill. I also make 500-mile road trips to see family and we always choose to take the X. Smooth ride. Plenty of space for people and cargo. Mileage isnt bad on highway. Friends love it. Think it looks cool. Two have gone on to purchased an XTerra.

  • Oldie but still good - 2000 Nissan Xterra

Buy it if mileage is appropriate for age and pricing consistent with Edmunds or KBB range. Must have Carfax and maintenance history

I bought mine new at first release of 2000 model year. Sole owner. Marathon road trips, city traffic, towing and commuting. Wonderful balance between interior space, utility, horsepower, gas mileage, etc. Family of four traveling regularly. I own the SE version because I dont believe in power everything. Ive added power door locks/security system and a towing hitch. Basic maintenance is all Ive had to do. Bang for buck, its on top of the heap.

  • My X Rocks HARD!!! - 2000 Nissan Xterra

Ive driven my XterraSEV64x4 from Atlanta, GA, to San Francisco, CA and back, TWICE. Ive driven my X from San Francisco to Tahoe for skiing trips, up to Napa Valley numerous times, all over the Sunshine State from Pensacola on over to Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando and Miami and back numerous times. Ive driven up in the north Georgia mountains in Helen, GA. Cruised throught the quaint germantowns, as well as the crazy rocky trails up to Amicalola Falls.

I recently bought a used 2000 xterra. It had about 118,000 miles on it, and is 12 years old, but still runs great. I love the way it looks, and drives. Gas mileage isnt the greatest but I dont do that much driving so its ok. I did have to replace the distributor, which was about 350.00 but other than that its been great, and I love it! Ive had it for 6 months and still love it like I did when I bought it. They didnt have the option that mine is but it is a SE automatic 4x4
