Model Overview:

The Nissan Murano was one of the first midsize crossovers introduced in the United States and quickly became a popular alternative to more traditional SUVs thanks to its taut, carlike driving character and avant-garde styling. Later Nissan Muranos are notable for their higher-quality interiors, updated technology features and higher fuel economy ratings.

New or used, the Murano is definitely worth a look if you're on the hunt for a midsize crossover with seating for five. In reviews, our editors have generally praised this Nissan's sophisticated appearance, stylish and comfortable interior and strong acceleration. Middling cargo capacity and poor rearward visibility are our main complaints about the Nissan Murano. You'll find competing models that are better on one or both of these counts, but most won't match the Murano's combination of performance and style.

We own this Murano SE for a few months now and we just love it. The build quality is superb, the luxury appointments all one could ask for. The engine is powerful and responsive, the unique seamless transmission smooth as could be. Its a joy to drive. Even though this is my wifes car (so to speak) and my car is a BMW Z3, I thoroughly enjoy driving this wonderful car. I cant really judge the "reliability" because we havent owned it long enough, but based on the quality weve observed so far, we expect the best.

I struggled with this decision long and hard. I like the styling of both cars. Both cars have their positives and negatives. First off, I didnt need or want 3rd row seating, so if this is a deal breaker, go with the Mazda. After owning a few SUVs and being a home owner, I can never go back to owning a sedan. To start I traded a Lexus 2010 RX 350. A wonderful car with no complaints. It is just too generic and boring. I had a silver one and it is one of the most common SUV models I see and there is nothing exciting or exceptional. Just good old fashion reliability. Nothing wrong with that. I just got bored after 5 years. I started looking at other make and models and noticed that most are variations of the same theme. From the Kia, to the Audi to the Lexus, they all just seem very similar. I even rented a BMW X-5 and an Audi Q5. Ridiculously complicated. I had to stop and pull over in the beemer to put the windshield wipers on. Come on! And to put the shifter in reverse you push it forward! And forget about using the entertainment system. Moving on, I wanted a vehicle that was both style and comfort, economical and practical. Something I thought was impossible. I was not going spend upwards of $50,000 on a car. Enter the Murano. Outstanding style. Easily the most comfortable drivers seat ever. The Mazda was quickly ruled out when I found it only had 6 way seats. The "zero gravity" seats in the Murano are the best I have experienced. There are missing features that I miss from the RX, such as automatic dimming headlights and the rain sensor windshield wipers found in the Mazda. But the trade off is the heated steering wheel ( I live in the cold northeast) and the panorama sun roof. Also the cooled seats cause it also gets hot up here. I also think the Murano is by far the best looking SUV out there. It is only missing the status branding of the Lexus or the BMW. That is important to some but not to me. I would rather have the money in the bank. Otherwise, I love the CVT transmission, but I am not a driving nut and need for speed testosterone guy. I want safe and quick acceleration when needed. But I prefer comfort and gas economy over acceleration. I average 23.3 overall and get 30-31 MPG on the highway. For a SUV with all wheel drive and 6 cylinder this is outstanding. The entertainment is Bose and is awesome. The GPS is typical; almost useless, but I have had that with every in car with GPS. I just use google maps and am done with it. The ride is smooth and quiet. Some have said the 20" wheels do not handle to bumps well, but I disagree. In New England the roads are terrible from winter frost heaves and the large wheels just seem to glide over them. Much much better than the Lexus. My complaints are: The Nissan Apps are useless. They would be better to have eliminated them rather than release something that just doesnt work. But overall, who cares. Also it takes just too long for the entertainment system to read connect to the iphone, that I cant listen to the radio for minutes when starting the car. Another very annoying feature is the stupid constant dinging when the car is in the on position and drivers door is open. Say you want to listen to the radio in a parking area and leave the drivers door open. I dont know how to shut this feature off and car manufacturers should stop trying to appease the dumb downed idiots. With keyless entry it is impossible to lock the keys in the car, so let me listen to the radio with the doors open. So to summarize, I love the vehicle, the style, the ride and the features. I do not believe there is a better car for the money than the Murano. If you are struggling with the decision, take each for an extended test drive and notice the seating comfort between the two. I am not looking back. There is nothing else out there that compares.

  • Love my MO - 2003 Nissan Murano

I luv my Murano! Wife loves it, kids love it, neighbors love it, dogs love it etc... It is so smooth and quiet, the first couple of times I came up to a stop light/sign, I thought the engine had died (it hadnt). Ive had a couple of things that needed fixing (sunroof and the rear cup holder), but other than that, it has been great. Mileage is around 21mpg city/highway. CVT is a different from regular transmissions, but you get used to it. It is pretty cool going 70mph and see the rpms below 2000. I like the 6 CD changer. I got a blue SL AWD with cafe latte cloth interior.

  • Great Handling - 2005 Nissan Murano

Murano SL with AWD handles great in all weather. I do not agree with the CVT dig on performance. This is a 245 HP engine which has plenty of pickup and go. It is not a sports car, but does feel very sporty. The CVT will prolong the transmission and save fuel cost.

  • We LOVE this car! - 2003 Nissan Murano

Only time will tell on this great car, however, all in all it has met our expectations! The gas mileage and emissions are not the greatest, but it is still the best SUV for the price out there. We drove A LOT of SUVs in this price range and were sold on Nissans reliability and service record. We know that this car is still in its initial life stage but wed purchase it again. It came down to the Mitsubishi Endeavor and the Murano and the Nissan dealer made all the difference.

The auto locking mechanism has locked me out of the car 4 times with the engine running!!!!!! Sometimes when you leave the vehicle it locks immediately, sometimes in a little while and sometimes a long while or not at all with the keys out of the ignition. Taken to dealer and problem still exists. CVT is noticable in stop and go traffic, searches for proper location in slow moving traffic. Can the pre muffler below the front seats be repiped to fit in the tunnel for the rear shaft. This hangs to far down and is very visible and ugly when approaching the vehicle. The steering wheel mounted cruise controls SHOULD be illuminated for ease and safety.

I read the cons of the Nissan Murano and cannot beleive what they are saying about the lack of power. It ts more than sufficient.

  • Love it!! - 2009 Nissan Murano

Well, its been a week and I love this car! Went from a Grand Cherokee and the difference is huge... butter soft leather, seat comfort, quiet ride, happy back seat passengers, great bose radio, and hands-free calls are just a few highlights. A tad tough to back up due to some blind spots but Im sure Ill adjust. Could not be happier with my car!

The Murano is a good vehicle. Cool design, great handling, good gas mileage & smooth V6. Its nice to have a vehicle that you dont see on the road every day.

  • Mixed Review - 2016 Nissan Murano
    By -

Pros: Great seats/comfort, intuitive safety features, good cost value versus competitive "luxury" SUVs, good exterior styling Con: bad road vibration from large tires-not fun to drive, inconsistent idle that also causes vibration, dealership service dept. inconsistent-good maintenance but slow to answer phone and poor communications
