This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima receives updates this year that make it less of a family sedan and more of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. Headlining this year's upgrades is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces a stunning 255 horsepower. For maximum performance, sport-tuned SE models now combine this engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include revised exterior styling, additional feature content and an optional GPS navigation system.

Pros:
  • Impressively powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, plenty of room for five adults.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

  • Fast Family Car - 2002 Nissan Maxima

This is a great car value-wise and dependability-wise. Ive owned 4 new Maxes(88,90,96,02) but the 02 is a little less impressive than previous ones except for performance. It is stylish but rides hard. Seat adjuster knobs hard to reach with big hands, tilt wheel locking lever is poorly located, no lites on steering wheel controls, road & wind noise @ hi speed, Bose failed, had to be replaced. At 14,000 miles, Im replacing this with an 04!

  • Great Power - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I drove BMWs, Mercedes Benzs and the new ES 300 and for the money, you can not beat the Maxima. None of the more expensive cars had as much power, and the Maxima had all of the options, and more, that the big bucks cars. You owe it to yourself to drive this car if your in the market for a $30K or more auto. Not as much snob appeal, but easier on the wallet.

I only had the car for 3 months. boght it brand new. It is a great car. You dont hear it on the street. It is just the radio, no engine noise. Very quiet for a V6.

  • From 540i to great value in 6.3 seconds. - 2002 Nissan Maxima

This car is the best value for the money out there. I test dove both the Acura TLS and the Lincoln LS, both nice cars but without the 6-speed they dont compare. The quality and options on the car are exceptional for the price. My previous car was a BMW 540i which you cannot compare, except that you get 75% of that car for 55% of the price. The next generation I believe due next year may effect resale.

After driving every import in the 20-30k price range (BMW, Volvo, Passat), I decided on a Nissan Maxima SE. Since I wanted a manual transmission, I was limited somewhat (No Accord, Acura or Camary). I fell in love with the Maximas looks and it drove like a dream. I am moving from an Acura Integra and what a difference! The Acura is a fun car to drive, but the Maxima blows it away. It has much less road noise and a lot more power. No other cars I drove gave me the value I got with the Maxima.

Great car, very fast and you will have to spend 20k more to beat it.

First Family car purchase ever. Considered the typical Camery, Accord, Passat and Legacy. The Max was larger in every sense of the word. Bigger wheels, engin, wheel base, F/R headroom, leg room, shoulder room - oh yea and a bigger thirst for fuel. It has a smooth wisper quiet powerful engin, its accelaration really fools you. I have already had to talk my way out of a ticket - and I was not even in a hurry. I do not like the rear headlights, and I am dissapointed in the paint. In all I would recommend the car - just pay close attention to the warrentee as it pertains to the paint - you will use it.

  • Great Second Car - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I bought this car last week. It is going to relieve me from driving my 2007 IS350 out of leased miles. It gives me amazing mpg (28+ mpg @70 mph). It is roomy and well-built. The engine has lots of power and a reasonable amount of torque. The quality of the leather is above average. Its nice to see that all the electric features still work @ 108,000 miles. It shows that prior owner took good care of it. I bought the SE trim so the ride is a little stiff thus noisy but not unlivable. The color is a pearl white and it has aged gracefully. The 02 Maxima is a great solution for people who need to commute but dont like to drive smaller cars and still get high 20s per gallon.

  • Awesome car, bad design - 2002 Nissan Maxima

The car is awesome. I put 1000 miles on it the first week i had it. In 5 days I had my Headlights stolen. WHAT IS WRONG WITH NISSAN TO MAKE THE CAR LIKE THIS 2 YEARS IN A ROW. Had the dealer replace with 2001 halogen lights costing $2600. Other than that i love my baby.

I wanted a mid-size 4-door, manual transmission vehicle with lots of options- there are no alternatives even close to the Maxima in this price range (~$16 - $18K in 2004). Car is comfortable, fast, large, loaded with options, and comes with Nissans rock solid reliablity. I drove a 4-dr G35 with a manual that felt confined and the interior looked/felt cheap.
