This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

FUUUUN FUUUUN. Looked for a "man" car. Only one out there. This is truly a sports car with four doors.

I have compared this veh with the Lincoln LS and the car a every bit as quiet and smooth for about $10,000 less money. Also the car has more features.

The car is fun to drive. Plenty of power and looks great. However, within the first month the driver side door handle broke. I had to take it back because the vent in the back seat area poors cold air on to the passengers feet regardless of the setting up front. The technician chalked this up to "poor design" -- to much distance the air has to travel in the duct work. The center console is poorly designed. Awkward buttons and settings. The trip computer doesnt tell me how many miles I have in my tank when it hits the "e" mark. Isnt that when you really want to know? Overall, I am pretty unhappy with the car. I expected more from Nissan at this price.

  • 2004 Nissan Maxima Elite a reliable vehicle - 2004 Nissan Maxima

Pros: Original, one owner car indicates the Elite, which is discontinued, is a loaded top of the line model with 4 bucket seats. Front wheel drive oversteer is disconcerting. Car purchased in June 2003 when model went on sale. A couple of factory flaws and several recalls all satisfactorily resolved within first two years. List of accessories equal to a vehicle costing at least $20k to $30k more. Will buy a RWD vehicle next time. Cons: Steering wheel entertainment controls wired incorrectly since new; remain uncorrected to date. A minor nuisance. Sunroof switch has become inoperable and requires replacement. This is a very cheap part and represents the required installation of the FOURTH switch since car was new. Remains uninstalled. Drivers power door lock is periodically inoperable from key FOB. Power lock is becoming worn out.

  • Beware of rotor problems - 2004 Nissan Maxima

    1. This is an excellent performance car, but I did not take enough time test driving to realize the ride with the low profile tires was going to be too hard. 2. I just spent $400 with the dealership to have the brake rotors turned to eliminate serve brake chatter at high speeds. With 30,000 miles and my prior experience, this is an unacceptable reliability issue. No coverage on the brakes even with the extended warranty. Bummer and the last Nissan I buy!

Best car I ever owned. This is my second Maxima, I will definately keep buying if this is as good or better than my first(2001). Great body design, very reliable cars.

My wife wanted one and I wasnt sure about Nissan. At one time not long ago their cars were not very good. However, I gave them a second chance and I am glad I did. I literally love this new Maxima SL.

I am not going to comment on interior or exterior look cuz thats personal taste. But the torque steer you just simply cant igore. I am very surprised they didnt learn anything from the Altima 3.5 experience(torque steer too). Do they think general public just wont notice that or what? I think Nissan is pushing out a lot of flashy cars fast with poor built/cheap qualities. They should pay more attention to basic engineering and quality. Toss gas guzzling 3.5 VQ engine with a lot of horse power in every car is just not the solution. Have to design good platforms to go with it. I am a little disappointed. not worth 30k!!!
