This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

  • Transmission Shot - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I purchased a 04 max, from the beginning ive had problems. The headliner had to be replaced because the fabric was peeling. The brakes have been awful, had to replace the sun roof, not the oval shaped one. The mileage is currently 71,000 miles and my transmission is completely shot. The car would jerk in the gears, especially when Im reversing then shifting to drive. The dealer says there are metal shavings inside the transmission and it needs to be replaced. This is gonna cost me $4900, parts and labor. I owe 2 more months payment on the car. When I finally own it, I cant drive it. Was gonna buy an Armada, but now I will never buy another Nissan again. Very disappointed.

The power train is great. Smooth, quiet and quick acceleration. The engine is definitely the best feature of this vehicle. But reliability is a question and quality of interior is not on level of Camry or Accord. Still thinking that the wiser choice would have been the Accord; but will withhold judgment so long as the reliability is much better than average.

Ive had this car for almost three months...one word, AWESOME. The engine truly is remarkable! Real fast city or highway. Definetly one of the sharpest looking sedans on the road, but dont take my word for it....buy one and see how many oohs and ahhs you get.

  • THE MAX!! - 2004 Nissan Maxima

This is the greatest car Ive ever owned. I also have a Chrysler 300 ,which I thought was great until I got the Max. It turns heads going down the road. It is just fun to drive. I recommend it.

  • great car... - 2004 Nissan Maxima

love the car. has been trouble free except for: a new radiator (original one leaked slightly, not enough to drip), noisy front pwr windows when going down in cold weather (30s), a few annoying "plastic squeaks"/ rattles inside, dealer "could not" fix...fixed them myself... expected Nissans flagship car to be tight as a drum with absolutely no noises. (I tend to be picky about this). Otherwise, it has been a wonderful car to own. Lots of comments on its great, different looks. Its really is quick and handles very well for a sedan of its size...couldnt expect too much more unless you spend a lot more. The 5-speed sportshift is a lot of fun.

So far so good. I picked it up yesterday after shopping around. You cant go wrong with this car. There is nothing out there with the stlye this car just oozes out. I went for the 6 speed manual transmission because, to me they are more fun to drive. The only semi confusing feature at first is the center control and data center. There are quite a number of buttons, but once you get the hang of it theyre nice to have.

  • Lower Quality interior than piror years - 2004 Nissan Maxima
    By -

My 4th Maxima. This is by far the poorest quality interior ever had with Maxima. Dependability & quality are still big draw but gone is the rich leather & cushy seats. More austere interior with your choice of quasi titanium or plastic formica veneer faux woodgrain trim. Dont put your arm on the armrest after the car sits in the sun awhile. OUCH! May entice Altima crowd to move up a model, but left us grannies out in the cold. Sorely tempted by Infinity which is basically the old Maxima, but husband had other ideas. Missing my 1996 Maxima with rich cushy black leather interior & great comfort. (& no tacky plastic trim panels)

  • Very Poor Quality Vehicle - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I absolutely will never, ever buy Nissan products again. The issues with this car are innumerable but Ill try and include them in order of decreasing cost to fix: New transmission (other complaints on this site) @ 70K miles, new paint job due to defective black paint that lasted only 3 years, new front struts at 65K miles, new front bearings @ 60K miles, front wheel shimmy is recurring issue since day 1, front headlamps are not clear due to sun after 4 years. The front turning radius is that of an 18-wheeler.

Nice styling... BMW influence.....roomy...sterile inside..harsher ride because of low profile tires..21 mph....too fast for front wheel drive...needs 4 wheel drive like Infinity..wait till 2007

  • I love my Maxima but.................... - 2004 Nissan Maxima

Ive had my Maxima for almost a month now. I love the speed and handling. But Ive also notice a weird bumping sound coming from the back when I go over bumps on the road. Also a small ratling sound coming from the hood. I am not sure if its the air conditioner or the engine. I havent had time to take into the dealer, but will do it sometime this week, other than that I love the car.
