This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

The ride is not as smooth as I thought it would be. The noise inside during riding is loud. Gas mileage is nothing to write home about.

I bought my Max privately just after the ABS sensors and actuator were replaced @ Lancaster Nissan. 14,000mi later, I needed the very same work done by the same dealer. I refuse. I have had other items go bad @ a couple $100 here and a couple $100 there. The car is beautiful but full of knocking noises. The car is uncomfortable because I sit on the seats instead of in them. I owned a 93 Altima & a 96 Max. Both were of a much better quality than this car. I owned a Buick between the two Maximas & will go back when I can get rid of this car. I bought my 2004 Max based on a good reputation. I will never buy another Nissan. -ScottieG

The Maxima had me at hello. After a test drive I had to have it. There are not that many four door sedans with power like this out on the streets these days. This car is appealing to all senses. The Driver performance package & 8 speaker Bose stereo(2 8 inch subs included) that can really get your heart pounding are well worth the extra beans. The Maxima clings to the road and excelerates with smooth powerfull force. This added to the fact that the new body style is one of the sweetest looking rides around, I would have to recomend this car to everyone. I could live in this car if I had to. Can you tell i love my Maxima!

I have had nothing but trouble with this car. I will never buy a Nissan again. The turn radius is similar to a huge truck. I kept getting flat tires because the chrome kept peeling from the wheels and the tires would not bond to the wheel and hold in the air. The transmissions are faulty. I have seen many reviews from others with the same transmission problem. I am sure Nissan knows about the bad transmissions. They told me when it was in warranty that it was broken motor mounts. I would not expect to have 2 broken motor mounts unless I hit something. A few hundred miles later and out of warranty transmission goes south. The interior buttons are cheap plastic and they crack and break lose.

My Maxima SE with the 5 spd auto trans is a blast to drive. (The manual would be even better, but the wife wont learn to drive it).It handles very well and is very fast, for a 6 cylinder. It is modern looking and gets more than its share of looks.

  • Maximas are over-rated - 2004 Nissan Maxima

The vehicle is difficult to maneuver in tight place and narrow driveways due to the 18" wheels. Visibility over the hood is nonexistant (Im 61") and it is next to impossible to determine by visual cues just how close one is to a forward object. Outside mirrows obstruct drivers view of curbs by blocking out about 50 degrees to the left and right of the outside scene. The adjustment control for the outside mirrows is poorly located and not well designed and is hidden by the steering wheel. Finally, the local gas milege is not very good. I get about 16.5 MPG in local driving. The EPA of 20 MPG on MSRP is unrealistic.

Great overall sports sedan. My 2nd Maxima in 5 years. Sold my first one to my son.

  • What did I get myself into - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I have always wanted to own a Max so I bought one. The first issue was the grille started to peel. The rims bent. The tires have to be balanced more often that 6k miles. It drives well though, I cant complain. It has excellent take off. The fuel economy is horrible!

Ordered the car from Nissan and got exactly what I wanted. SL in spirited bronze with driver preferred package and sunroof. I amm a big person and the car is very comfortable. Even the backseats. Made for long road trips. Planty of power to pass those rubber neckers on the highway. Can get you into trouble with the local police if you dont use cruise control.
