This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

this max replaces 01 se.the car looks and drives great.lots of power and handles solidly.the brakes on ours emit a loud squeak when releasing but we were told by nissan that this is "normal".i also prefer the previous generation climate control as there are way too many buttons on this dash.favorite features are the memory seats and 6 cd player.mileage is 22mpg.this car would be a home run if i can get the brakes quieted down.

I love my new Maxima. I purchased it 2 weeks ago after researching and reading consumer reviews. My Maxima is fully loaded w/ Journey & Driver Preferred package, Sirius satillite radio, sunroof and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC); Silver w/ Black interior. It was the only one available in California and I drove from San Diego to Long Beach to get it. I take my time going home and I dont mind getting stuck in traffic. I get so many compliments. I had a 1997 GLE. If Nissan keeps making Maxima better each year I may have to get another Maxima when I turn 40 instead of the Mercedes E320 I promised myself.

If this is Nissans flagship vehicle, I hate to see the quality of the rest of the line! Rattles in front, rattles in rear, deck lid had to be repainted, radio doesnt pick stations very good, chrome coming off of all 4 wheels. I took car back to fix the problems, I was told no problem found with the rattles??, radio problem is SOP. I was told the wheels would have to ordered, finally got them two and a half months later. After the wheels were replaced, car now has a shimmy they cant fix!! I would not reccomend this car to anyone!!!

I always liked the Maxima and when the new design came out in 2004 - I had to have it. This was my first "brand new car". I enjoyed it for a while but problems developed early on. I had both front struts replaced at 10K miles. Two headlights (requires removing the front fender). Front brakes at 22k miles - I had to pay but I feel that should have been covered by the dealer. The glass roof has been replaced three times, a brake sensor was replaced, two tires and one rim (pot hole). I feel I have gotten to know the service department much more than I would ever want to.

Great car, I love to drive it. When I 1st got it I had to return it to the dealer because my sterring wheel was shaking very bad. They wanted me to drive the car like that until I came in for my 1st oil chg. Well, that didnt wash with me, I had them to balance the tires, and it now it drives better, but I still had a little bit of a shake. I was also told I could burn unlead gas in the car.

  • Desparately Wanting to Love My Car - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I want to like this car because it is so much fun to drive. I purchased this car new with 9 miles on it. It has 17k miles now and the following repairs have already had to be made to this car: air conditioning, struts, and all the parts in the sunroof with the exception of the glass. We have had it in the shop 9 times now and have been told all are manufacturers defects. The worst part about it is that we are so tired of having an unreliable car that we decided to sell it... the resale value is HORRIBLE. So, I guess we are just stuck with a lemon. I really like Nissans styling on all their cars... but their reliability isnt proving to be so great.

  • A bargain G35 and better! - 2004 Nissan Maxima
    By -

Almost signed for a G35 after testing everything in or above this price class. The fresh styling sold me as well as the quality build and saving $2000 below Infiniti -they would not discount...Nissan dealer agreed to reasonable non-sticker price and went looking for the exact car I wanted...the 04 Maxima is king!
