Overview & Reviews
The Maxima receives updates this year that make it less of a family sedan and more of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. Headlining this year's upgrades is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces a stunning 255 horsepower. For maximum performance, sport-tuned SE models now combine this engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include revised exterior styling, additional feature content and an optional GPS navigation system.
- Impressively powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, plenty of room for five adults.
- Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

Great Car - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By Chuck Konfrst - September 5 - 6:40 amThis car has been fantastic. Its fun to drive, very roomy, and decent fuel economy. With the leather & moonroof, its almost elegant. Aggressive exterior styling along with the 255 horsepower engine make this car fun to drive. My only wish is for the suspension to be a bit tighter - the GLE is a bit softer than the SE. The back seat is very roomy and comfortable. I originally was considering the VW Passat, but I felt the value of this car was much better than the VW. If youre considering this car, I would definitely recommend it.

For the family man who is not DEAD yet! - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By Shawn - August 17 - 3:26 amI had a 92 maxima then an Acura Legend, now I have a 2002 Maxima! I am loving every second of it. This car is perfect for someone with a small family who stills needs to feel alive. When my wife asks me to go get something from the store i jump at the opportunity. This car is a pleasure to drive. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Replacement cost of xenon headlamps - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By creationsbyme - August 3 - 12:13 amFirst, the motor runs great at 140K. The trans has started making noise. Undrivable right now. When I replaced one of the xenon headlamps, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor, were not talking about the whole assembly, just the bulb itself. At the Nissan dealership in Victorville, CA $258.00 for the bulb!! Can you believe it? I went on line and found the cheapest to be $159.00 My suggestion for someone who may not want to pay that much is when the xenon goes out, run your brights instead of replace. Bright bulbs cost $8. Oh, the spark plugs are internal. Tune up costs $418.00 to replace 6 spark plugs.

Maximus supreme - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By SL8ROCK - July 13 - 7:20 pmBought my SE in May of 06 with about 48k on it and it rides like a dream. Those 6 cylinders come in handy on the highway. Takes curves pretty well, too.

Great car for the money - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By CarbUff - July 4 - 2:00 amMuch better value than TL. Better performance and IMO more desireable mix of features. Acura owners also tend to rely on snob appeal to defend their purchase whereas Max owners know a good value when they see one.

Luxury-level sports sedan - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By One_Hand_Sound - June 28 - 10:00 amThe build quality, smoothness, quietness and sheer power are on a luxury car level. I have two new Maximas, 7 months old now and with a total of 13000 miles between the two. Absolutely not one single problem with either car the whole time. How can they make such a complex machine so perfect?

First time Nissan Owner - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By bbpe01 - June 28 - 10:00 amSo far so great. Dealership was good to work with and we made a great deal, better than Edmunds TMV estimate. Everything is great about the car, but it could use better insulation. Wind and road noise at highway speeds.

Great sheer performance - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By Go Blue - May 28 - 3:30 pmPros: Superior 255 HP engine. You cant beat this in the family sedan market. This car flies- great acceleration. Standard Xenon Headlamps. Very cool feature- gives your car luxury status. Great safety feature. Cons: Some people dont like clear tailights. Paint quality not that great- chips easily. Premium Bose stereo not worth the high price. Overall, more exciting than Accord or Camry. Not as pretty as the Passat, but much faster.

Bargain - 2002 Nissan Maxima
By Fazal - May 22 - 2:00 amThis car is the most amazing thing in its price range. The performance more than makes up for the few small problems with the rear end.
