This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year's Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, lots of upscale options, sweet V6, available with a manual transmission.
Cons:
  • Some small, oddly arranged controls.

  • Best car Ive owned - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I paid a high price for this fully appointed 04 Maxima with 100k miles in 2010 ($10,000) and, after driving it for 7 years, I can honestly say it was money well spent because it has been the best car Ive ever owned. Comfortable, powerful, dependable, attractive and low maintenance. Couldnt ask for a nicer car! Approaching 200,000 miles now and the engine and tranny are still rock solid but the suspension needs work so Ive purchased a 2010 Maxima.... Nice as the 2010 is, the 2004 still gets better gas mileage and has more spunk. Amazing car!

I bought my 04 maxima in 05 with around 40k on it and it now has 170k. I love the look and power of the engine. Its style still looks great on the road. I bought the car b/c of style and reliability. The tranny went out around 50k miles(fortunately I had and extended warranty). The CD player went out twice and I always had problems with the heat going out in winter and ac in summer. I was very optimistic about the car but around 150k it just started having continuous problems. The power steering line leaked, the radiator and thermostat went bad and every sensor in the world seems to go bad annually( and it is over 200+ to fix each, 5 different ones have went out). I love the car and have had it for over 10 years but unfortunately I will not buy another one and will stick to toyota or Honda. Nissan just has too many little problems and is not very reliable.

Equipped to Journeyman Package Level plus VDC control and stability option. Other equipment included: GPS Nav System,LCD computerized instrument display, moon roof,350 watt "tuned to car" Bose stereo system, heated leather seats/steering wheel, Serius Satelite Radio. First car since my new 1969 BMW that Blew me away with cars impressive balance of solid performance, handling, braking and interior luxury/comfort. Impressed with exceptionally good gas mileage. Interesting note on back of gas lid door says "For maximum performance use premium fuel."

  • What a Disappointment - 2004 Nissan Maxima

I purchased my 04 Maxima brand new and had high expectations. The first 3 years were relatively fine .... only minor inconveniences with recalls (sky view roof, heated seats) and minor mechanical issues. During the fourth and fifth years I had nothing but trouble ... motor mounts, transmission, computer errors, sensor trouble. It finally got to the point that the vehicle was unsafe for me to drive my children in ... I was afraid that it would sputter and stall with them in the vehicle as it ahd done to me alone on 2 prior occasions. Finally dumped it at the MBZ dealer and purchased an 08 C350

  • SWEET RIDE - 2004 Nissan Maxima
    By -

I purchased my Maxima about 1/2 a year ago with 89,000 miles on it and so far so good. I may do the struts soon, front a rear, but other than that manual trans is sweet, clutch is working fine, and engine wants to go go go! Glad I went with the manual after reading some reviews of the automatic trans. jerking, plus it is extra fun to drive. My only complaint is the road noise and that it burns a quart of oil every 5,000 miles. I would only by a manual Maxima, and so far happy with my purchase!

  • BUY THIS CAR! - 2004 Nissan Maxima

Why should you buy this car: 1) The engine. Nissans V6 engine has long been considered among the best V6s built. 265 HP will blow you away. 2) The styling. There is no disputing that this is the best looking family sedan in the under $30 000 category. Park it next to an Accord, Camry, or Mazda 6 and youll be sold. 3) The interior. It is huge! Very comfortable and plenty of storage. 4) The reliabilty. Equal to Handa and Toyota. 5) The ride. You will not stop smiling when you are behind the wheel. I cant think of a single reason that anybody would buy an Accord or Camry over the Maxima. Maxima owners secretly laugh at Accord and Camry owners.
