This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima receives updates this year that make it less of a family sedan and more of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. Headlining this year's upgrades is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces a stunning 255 horsepower. For maximum performance, sport-tuned SE models now combine this engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include revised exterior styling, additional feature content and an optional GPS navigation system.

Pros:
  • Impressively powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, plenty of room for five adults.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

  • This car is fun fun fun, but only if... - 2002 Nissan Maxima

...only if you have the 6 speed manual transmission. Let me remind you that the Maxima is a sports car with 4 doors, you should not even look at the automatics.

  • Great car but beware of headlamp design - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Great car, fun to drive and reliable. Big letdown is the ease that thieves can steal the headlamps - done to me in 10 minutes and replacement cost is tremendous - $2,100. Terrible, unsecure design by Nissan.

  • A great car - 2002 Nissan Maxima

This is a fabulous sports sedan. It was the last model year before the Maxima came out in the Altima body style. The acceleration was so smooth and effortless due to the 255hp engine. The ABS brakes and traction control system gave the car a 10+ in handling. Steered like a sports car. Because I am a low mileage driver, about 7500 mpy, the dealer offered me a great trade on a 2005 Altima, or I would still be driving it.

Just bougnt my first Maxima (GLE) w/roof and front side air bag. Got a good deal and very friendly service at the dealer. Loved it the first time drove it. Quiet and fast! Everyting is easy to control, even the audio controls are built on the steering wheel. Love the trip computer, too, but not the number on when you see your average gas milage.

I have had this car for 7 months and I drive it about 30 hours plus a week for work. I have had no trouble and love it.

  • Whats Not to Like? - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Bought the car at 17K miles. Have put 27k on it. The car is extremely fast, quiet, and reliable. The Bose stereo rocks! Ive replaced the tires and had the brakes done--nothing else. And it is absolutely beautiful. This is a car that you can put 200k miles on and it will still look new if you keep it clean. Nissan is making great cars and this is one of them.

  • Am in love with my car! - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I bought my first Nissan last year after owning a Chevy Barretta for 11 years and over 150,000 miles. I was undecided between Honda (Accord), Subaru (Legacy Sedan), and Toyota (Camry). Many friends encouraged me take a look at Nissan, they all had good experiences with their old and new Nissans. So, I went in, tested both Altimas and Maximas and settled on a 2001 Altima. I was very pleased with it but kept remembering how comfortable I felt driving the Maxima. I later drove a Maxima rental and was hooked. So went in ang traded my Altima for a 2002 Maxima GLE. WHAT A DREAM COME TRUE. This car has it all, power, looks, luxury, comfort ... I love my Maxima!

  • Initial thoughts - 2002 Nissan Maxima

These are my initial thoughts: - Superior engine performance. Smooth as silk. I am still way under the 2000 mile mark, but the quality of the engine is unmistakable.(10 points) - Comfort. Cabin needs to be quieter still. Nonetheless, I will compromise here. (8 points) - Fuel economy: This is not a Toyota Echo! - Build quality: I strongly believe that the quality of the big 3 Japanese autos (Honda, Toyota and Nissan) is flat out superior if the product were made in Japan. These 2002/2003 Max are the last of that breed. - Interior: Very pleasant. - Exterior: I felt a slight odd styling, clear feeling of a stop-gap between the 2001 and 2004.

  • Bad Transmission - 2002 Nissan Maxima

My transmission died at only 76,000 miles. I bought it used so i assume it was driven hard by the previous owner. I do still love the car though, its faster than most other cars and looks good too.

  • Take care of it! - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I bought brand new and have had NO problems out of routine. Still have original clutch, orig struts (not same ride but is fine), maybe down a quart between changes. OEM stereo died a few years ago, purchased from Crutchfield and upgraded myself. I LOVE this car and am planning on driving it to 300K or more! This is also my 4th Maxima.
