This Year's Model Updates:

The all-new third-generation 2002 Altima represents a total revision and rethinking of Nissan's midsize sedan -- it brings a level of design and performance that currently does not exist in its class. With a choice of a 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 or 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an all-new four-wheel independent suspension, the Altima offers spirit with state-of-the-art technology. An aggressive new exterior design with increases in all major dimensions and a driver-oriented interior with myriad convenience and luxury features set the Altima apart in the highly competitive sedan marketplace.

Pros:
  • Sports car power in a midsize sedan body, high level of features, distinct new shape.
Cons:
  • All-new design could mean first-year teething problems and dealer mark-up.

  • Great Car - 2002 Nissan Altima

I bought a 2002 Nissan Altima, 5 spd, leather, moon roof, spoiler, wood trim, 3.5L. This is a great car. It is very well built and is the bset car I have ever owned (and I have owned a lot). I had a problem with my fuel pump however Nissan fixed it right away. Dont think though you can skimp on less than 92 octane gas. The car runs much poorer with anything less.

This is a very fun car to drive. The performance is there every time you need it just waiting to be released.

28k in just over a year and absolutely no problems at all. The VQ engine is reknown for reliability and the 240-hp is a tremendous workhorse. In day-to- day driving, the engine is smooth and pulls well. Passing acceleration at highway speeds is a breeze. The interior could be a bit better (make it like the Maxima), but fine for the first model year.

It eats gas. Be careful. The stated consumption is nowhere near reality.

This car is fun to drive. I did have a clutch problem though. It was squeaking right at engagement, but not every time. It took 3 trips to dealer before they heard/felt it. Its fixed now (warrenty) and I really like the car. Had a 2001 Acura CL Type S before this that I liked more, but I needed 4 doors. Altima is lighter and more responseive, but not as luxerious.

So far, so good, except for slight problem with trouble lights on dash that have been staying on after intial start up. Dealership unable to fix. Problem goes and comes.

  • Average car.. Awful service - 2002 Nissan Altima

This car has a great engine and very spacious interior. That is where the good things stop. Nissan service departments are awful. Car dead for no reason and dealer has it for 3 days each time with no loaner car offered for me or my family. Still cannot tell me whats wrong. Multiple other small issues. This is the 1st and last Nissan I will buy. Going back to Honda

  • DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! Looks good but repairs are needed every couple of months - 2002 Nissan Altima

I bought this car my sophomore year of college with 109K on it. As soon as I brought it back to school I started seeing problems immediately. It made this rattling noise when the AC was on at idle and so I took it to the dealership and they said it was the belt. Got that fixed for close to $400 and it still to this day rattles when the AC is on at idle. Had to get the crankshaft pos sensor fixed a few months ago. Every time I get it fixed the check engine light is back on about 2 months later. Now it is losing tons of oil and coolant and I am just being told it needs a cat converter and I dont have the money for it. Only has 123K on it. I am def looking for new car. This car is JUNK!

  • Aging quickly - 2002 Nissan Altima

I loved the new car. My first car ever. Had a lot of fun with it but getting pretty tired of it. I had a recall issue with the engine crankshaft when it was 2 yrs old .. spoiled my vacation. The car has failed to start on half a dozen occasions. Lately Ive been getting a cylinder misfire. The car also started knocking about 3 months ago so I went back to 87 octane fuel. Ive also noticed a lack of power recently. Or maybe its because I am hesitant to push it now because of all the reliability issues. I have 85k on it and hope to get it to 6 digits before letting it go.

  • good car BUT........... - 2002 Nissan Altima

Bought this car with 109,000 miles on it. reallygood deal, the car was awesome, but after 3 months the check engine came on so we took it to the dealership they said it needed new spark plugs $120. After it got fixed we drove about 300 more miles and the check endine light came on again. so we took it to the dealer again. after a few days the dealer said that the car had a blown head gasket in the engine and the coolant was getting inside the engine, the estimate for repairing was $2000 and that is a lot of money. i think that he was lying because it doesnt cost more than $900 to fix it. I think i am going to sell this car and buy another 2002 altima with lower miles.
