This Year's Model Updates:

The all-new third-generation 2002 Altima represents a total revision and rethinking of Nissan's midsize sedan -- it brings a level of design and performance that currently does not exist in its class. With a choice of a 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 or 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an all-new four-wheel independent suspension, the Altima offers spirit with state-of-the-art technology. An aggressive new exterior design with increases in all major dimensions and a driver-oriented interior with myriad convenience and luxury features set the Altima apart in the highly competitive sedan marketplace.

Pros:
  • Sports car power in a midsize sedan body, high level of features, distinct new shape.
Cons:
  • All-new design could mean first-year teething problems and dealer mark-up.

A real sporty sedan that isnt meant for driving in the slow vehicle lane. Traded in a 99 Maxima for the 02 Altima. When I compared the MSRP, the Altima was actually $200 more! The only thing to justify that price was the stronger engine - the materials used are substandard when compared to the pricetag. If youre looking for a pure sports car that you can squeeze the family into and not get socked by the insurance cost, then this is the car for you. Youve got to give something to get something.

I puchased this car in November of last year. I have put 12,000 miles on the car so far without any major problems and only two minor ones. A spring broke in the lid for the cupholders and the car was delivered without the steering wheel controls for radio. Both of these were fixed by the dealership with no problems. I do notice some wind noise at high speeds, but not enough that it would deter another purchase.

Ive had my altima for almost 2 years now. I have had trouble with the gas tank door opening and have also had a hard time starting it from time to time, I guess it wouldnt be so bad if it had a good warranty which nissan doesnt even though I purchased the extended warranty. Nissan may have worked some of their glitches out in the newer models, at least I hope.

  • Altima hits a "home-run" - 2002 Nissan Altima

Wonderful improvement over the old Altima for the performance and styling lovers. The 3.5 is sweet and the body styling is unique. A fun car to drive and gets plenty of attention. Can`t wait to see what is coming out of the updated Maxima stable. Good value for the base car, but too costly to get to the sunroof.(no a-la-carte option here)

  • Altima Shakes & Noisy - 2002 Nissan Altima

My new Nissan 2.5S Altima shakes uncontrollably between 60 - 75 mph. I have already had tires re-balanced. Still a major problem. Also, if a back window is open the road noise sounds like a jet taking off. Oh yeah, the sheet metal is missing under drivers feet. What a mess. I am now making another trip to the dealer Bill Cook.

  • surpasses extremely high expectations - 2002 Nissan Altima

After reading reviews here on Edmunds and other car sites, I narrowed down my search for a 4 door sedan between the Altima, Passat and Accord. THough I initially leaned towards the Passat, with its nice interior and good mileage,I liked the overall value the Altima gave me. Even with the premium package, whch included the Bose 8 speaker stereo, leather wrapped wheel, moon roof, and steering wheel controls, for the stereo and cruise control the Altima came in ~ 1 -2k cheaper than the similarly equipped Passat. After a test drive in the Altima, I was hooked. Overall, a great package for the money you pay.

This has been a very good family car. It rides well, handles family needs for trips and still looks sharp going down the road. There is more than enough power in the 4cyl. model to get the job done and still provided decent city drive MPG of around 25 - 27 (Standard) depending on driving style. I do not recommend the OEM tires that came with the car as they proved to be junk. With a decent set of all season after-market tires. I had no issues driving around in the snow of VT. granted I live in the city area. I recommend this car as both new and used model. Has potential for tuning if that is your desire.

  • Its all that - 2002 Nissan Altima

Eye-catching, comfortable for 5 (Im 64" and 4 other adults fit nicely), quick when you want it, thrifty if thats your goal, power sound system, and that aint all. Load up with options and youre still priced under an equivalent Toy/Honda/Passat. Oh yes, its got a huge trunk and sips at the Regular tank at the gas station.

  • Just What I Was Looking For... - 2002 Nissan Altima
    By -

My 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 S was just the car I was looking for. Its 4 cylinder engine has more horsepower (175)than the V6 (170hp) Chevrolet Malibu that I traded in. This is much more car than I have ever had in the past! The convenience package is a definite PLUS... as is the power sunroof and the rear spoiler. The keyless entry allows me to roll down the front windows with just the touch of the button. This is VERY nice on a simmering hot day when the car has been locked up. To top is off, the body style is S-L-E-E-K!! You wont regret purchasing a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 S!!

I have had the car for two months and the car as been great so far except for the tires seam to wear fast. You cant help but lay into the pedel making the car it the 60mph mark in around 5.9 seconds. I would recomend replacing the stock air filter with an after market air filter with a K@N filter charger. You can expect a little savings at the pumps and a bit more throttle response as well. Heated seats are a plus.
