This Year's Model Updates:

The all-new third-generation 2002 Altima represents a total revision and rethinking of Nissan's midsize sedan -- it brings a level of design and performance that currently does not exist in its class. With a choice of a 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 or 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an all-new four-wheel independent suspension, the Altima offers spirit with state-of-the-art technology. An aggressive new exterior design with increases in all major dimensions and a driver-oriented interior with myriad convenience and luxury features set the Altima apart in the highly competitive sedan marketplace.

Pros:
  • Sports car power in a midsize sedan body, high level of features, distinct new shape.
Cons:
  • All-new design could mean first-year teething problems and dealer mark-up.

When the car works its great, when it doesnt, its such a hassle. Had problems from the beginning, bought it the first year they came out with the new body style. In winter, back doors wouldnt shut until the car warmed up. Had TONS of recalls! Very inconvenient. Car still has problems starting, something about the gas flooding into something, and I have to sit there with my foot on the gas holding it down until it does start. And supposedly theres no way to fix this problem. Such a headache. The car isnt worth all this trouble.

I bought my Nissana used(19,000m) and have had to take advantage of the warranty twice. Once for heating problems, once because a sensor malfunctioned and the car wouldnt start(Still waaiting for the dealership to reimburse for the towing). I do like the car and enjoy the drive. Drives decently in the snow with snow tires all around. I broke my rule about buying a first model year after a major change.

We got the 2.5S model with the standard transmission. Were glad we got the standard, it is so peppy and poweful, I cant even tell that it is a V-4. Were both very tall, over six feet, and can fit comfortably in the front of the back. Excellent ride. We hope to have it forever.

Ive only had this car for a week and I already love this car. I have no complaints, the car handles and looks great. Every day people are telling me how great the car looks. I cant think of a car both American or Asian that is a better value. I was debating between a manaul and automatic transmision, Im very happy with the automatics performance. I would definitely recommend this vehicle.

A lot of people are complaining about their cam shaft sensors. Well my check engine light came on for the exact same problem. Turned out I was just using the wrong type of oil. Make sure you are using 5-30W oil to avoid this problem. After a couple hundred miles with the correct oil in the car the problem went away. Our car is the V6 with a 152,400 miles on it and to date the only problem weve had to fix is replace the seals in the engine, oil cooler and the rear value gasket. The interior is a little cheap Ill admit. But the car def. makes up for it with that fantastic engine. A great car but it has to be maintained

I loved the design of the 02 Ultima and thought it would be a good switch from my 95 ford thunderbird. The car was O.K. until it died in traffic at 46,000 miles. After being towed to the dealer and a new crank sensor later, my check engine light came on. Problem with the catalytic converter. I then read the recall report on NHTSA website - the Ultima has a major flaw with the converter that can destroy the engine. I should have bought a Ford! I think you will be hearing much more about the problems with this car. Im thinking of selling mine before I had planned.
