This Year's Model Updates:

The all-new third-generation 2002 Altima represents a total revision and rethinking of Nissan's midsize sedan -- it brings a level of design and performance that currently does not exist in its class. With a choice of a 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 or 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and an all-new four-wheel independent suspension, the Altima offers spirit with state-of-the-art technology. An aggressive new exterior design with increases in all major dimensions and a driver-oriented interior with myriad convenience and luxury features set the Altima apart in the highly competitive sedan marketplace.

Pros:
  • Sports car power in a midsize sedan body, high level of features, distinct new shape.
Cons:
  • All-new design could mean first-year teething problems and dealer mark-up.

  • Not Impressed! - 2002 Nissan Altima

I have had my Altima in the shop a couple of times now because it just wont start. The first time I was able to get it started by pressing on the gas several times. But, the last time it happened, that didnt work, so I had to have it towed from my garage. The first time the service dept. said they had no idea what was causing it. This last time all they said was basically it was my fault because I didnt have the 15,000 mile RECOMMENDED service done. But, thats not the problem because the first time I took it in with this problem, I only had 10,000 miles on it!

The first car was the Mazda 626. The 626s V6 170 hp engine was seriously lacking power for its weight. Although it did have a close ratio 5spd manual which did have good usage of the power it still is not powerful. Next, I test drove the Volkswagen Passat. While the car is extremly practical their are too many of them out on the road and they look too generic. Same problem with the Honda Accord. Every one and their mother owns a honda accord. Then, I test drove the Chrysler sebring Lxi. Good car but, lacking in power and room. The trunk is small for the size of the car. Drove the Altima. With 240hp and 246lb ft torque it beats the others

Ultimate Altima, great sporty looking car with a quick 4 cylinder engine. Very comfortable ride, although wind noise in drivers door which can be corrected at Dealer. There is a hole in the drivers door that they fill. Otherwise very quiet, great on gas.

  • SPEED DEMON!!!! - 2002 Nissan Altima

I purchased this car while overseas. It was great gift for myself coming back. I took it instantly on the highways of Southern California. It is great and fun to drive. Passing is a breeze and handling the car at high speeds was also simple. Oh I have to say that its top end speed is the most alluring factor. While on a late night drive on I-15 I hit 140 with pedal to spare.

  • Never Again - 2002 Nissan Altima

I am having the same difficulties starting my 2002 Nissan Altimas engine this winter as last which was supposedly fixed by two recalls and numerous trips to the dealership. My dealer blames this problem on too much fuel in the cylinder if the car is not fully warmed up in cold weather before turning off engine. I have never experienced this problem with the American made, Honda, or Toyota vehicles that I have owned. I had to take my car in for five recalls, everything from the headlight assembly to the tail pipe hanger. This car is terrible in the snow or on wet roads. It pulls to the right when accelerating on a wet surface. Its power window regulator malfunctioned. The quality of workmanship in this vehicle and dealer worst I have ever experienced. I am unloading this dog before the warranty runs out.

  • Dont shop at Northside Nissan at SC. - 2002 Nissan Altima

If you want a good deal and honest people dont go to Northside nissan. My experience was awfull. They are pushy to run your credit and they can trick you into a suckers deal. The Nissan product is awesome but the dealership gives it a bad name...

  • Defective Altima - 2002 Nissan Altima

The 2002 Altima has defective catalytic converters. The media comes apart and gets sucked into the engine and destroys the rings. That is why so many folks complain about high oil usage. Nissan has abandoned owners and refused to do a recall. Buyer beware when dealing the this car company. My daughter purchased this junker and now cant afford the $4000 to fix it. Google "Altima engine failures" before you buy a Nissan. Who knows what other Nissans might have wrong with them after 70,000 miles. Owners beware.

  • Great Vehicle!! - 2002 Nissan Altima

I love my car. I have owned it for 2 years now, and I can say from experience that it is the best auto purchase that Ive ever made. The drivers seat squeaks when driving over bumpy areas for some reason, but the problem is minor. There have been a few recalls on the car, also, but all of the repairs were free.
