This Year's Model Updates:

For '99 the Mountaineer gets optional rear load leveling and a reverse parking aid. It also receives a new seat design.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines and plenty of safety options make it a great family mover.
Cons:
  • More "distinctive" than an Explorer but not necessarily more attractive.

  • Looks, luxury, very good reliability - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Purchased the vehicle in 2001, it has been a joy to own, excepting rear differential seal leak, shot EGR valve, and a bad rear wheel speed sensor. Vehicle is "old generation" SUV, huge inside and handling is kind of gimpy on the road. Minor suspension probs as the vehicle gets older. This model year received very good reliability ratings in the Consumer Repts guide compared to other model years. Recommended.

  • Better than Expected - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

For the money, the looks and the performance this SUV is a very good deal. The interior is well fit, no squeaks ect., the leather still smells new and has held up very well. The AWD is exceptional in the snow and wet and my wife has confidence while driving it. More money than an Explorer but (I have had 5)worth the step up.

Had a 95 explorer..excellent sold with 163000 mi never a problem. Bought 99 Merc Mountaineer with 23000 mi, a joy to ride and drive, never any problems, best vehicle EVER had!

  • I love this truck - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I bought this Mntr last year and have enjoyed almost every day since. I agree with theother posting about the el;ectrical problems, they seem to happen. I cannot see my radio lights at all. I wish the middle compartment opened from the side instead of straight up, it is annoying. The gas mileage is a bite also. The vehichle drives great and looks awesome. The value has dropped significantly in the last year which is another downside. I would buy it again, but a six not an eight cylinder.

After looking at Explorers for a couple of weeks, we found that there were way too many options and interior and exterior colors. Finding a V8 with grey interior and good options was impossible. We found the Mountaineer to have all the upgrades we wanted and had more of a luxury feel. The head lights, tail lights, and grill set it apart from the Explorer. The V6 is powerful, but if you tow or just love power (like me), you have to get the 5.0 V8.

  • Great SUV - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

This has ben a bullet proof, reliable vehicle on all accounts. Perfect compromise of size, space, and fuel efficiency. Other than the Firestone tire debacle, the only service this vehicle has required was oil and filter changes.

  • My favorite vehicle - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I love this SUV. Bought it new, have over 170,000 miles on it and hope to get another 170,000 miles out of it. The 302 V8 does and pulls everything I ask it to. This SUV still turns heads and get compliments on it after 10 years of owning it. I also drive a Jeep Commander. For snow I still prefer the Mountaineer. Had the shocks replaced a month ago and ride is very stiff now. Hope it will smooth out with a little more miles on them.

  • VERY GOOD SUV - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I PURCHASED THIS SUV NEW AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. I HAVE THE V6 ENGINE. I LOADED IT WITH ALL OF THE OPTIONS. THE ONLY OPTION THAT I DID NOT WANT WAS THE LEATHER SEATS. THEY ARE COLD IN THE WINTER, AND HOT IN THE SUMMER. THE CLOTH SEATS ALSO HELP TO CUT DOWN ON THE NOISE INSIDE THE SUV. THE AC AND HEATER ARE GREAT. THE RADIO IS THE BEST THAT I HAVE EVERY HAD. I ORDERED IT WITH THE TOW PACKAGE, SO WITH THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON I HAVE REAL 4 WHEEL DRIVE. (TOW PACKAGE GIVES YOU BOTH REAR WHEELS WORKING ALL THE TIME, THIS IS A VERY GOOD THING). ON THE OPEN ROAD I GET 23 MPG AND AROUND TOWN 16 MPG. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER.

  • Mountaineer Fan - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I have owned this vehicle for over five years and it is one of the best cars I have ever had. The worse problem was a noisy alternator. Other than that just the normal brake, battery, and such replacements have been required. I would buy another except for the gas mileage issue and somewhat harsh ride quality.

  • I will buy another one - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

If you want the reliability of an Explorer, but want to drive something a little differant and a little more upgraded, pick a Mountaineer. I have driven it in every kind of weather and it has performed great.
