Overview & Reviews
For '99 the Mountaineer gets optional rear load leveling and a reverse parking aid. It also receives a new seat design.
- Powerful engines and plenty of safety options make it a great family mover.
- More "distinctive" than an Explorer but not necessarily more attractive.

Car caught fire - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By flaming - June 8 - 10:00 amThe vehicle was great to drive, very reliable. The problems started occuring about 45,000. The windshield wipers came on sporatically. Later there was a recall for this problem. After a few months of driving the LCD radio light went out as well as the horn. Before I had a chance to get this fix less than a week later the car caught fire while sitting in the parking lot overnight. Determined to be an eletrical fire. Buyer beware, I beleive sometime in the near future there may be another recall on these models and year.

Very Reliable - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By Edward - July 16 - 10:13 amI bought it at 32K miles and now it has 107K miles. Very reliable. The all-wheel-drive feature handles superbly in snow, ice, and rain. ABS is top-notch. Nice V8 power. The sound system and cruise controls on the steering wheel are an excellent touch. My only complaints have been a seat belt that pulls too tight, spotty FM reception about 25 miles outside Nashville city limits, and a rear-windshield wiper that never completely wipes the back glass.

99 Mountaineer - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By jas2 - May 21 - 10:00 amOverall excellent vehicle. I experienced a minor irritant with the top interior front door moldings. The passenger side clip broke a couple years ago, and I periodically have to re-secure it. The privacy screen objected when my dachshund climbed on it when it was deployed--but who would expect it not to? My husband got it to work again, but the retractor spring is weak.

Pretty Standard? - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By bill denver - October 14 - 2:00 amGood value if you pay only blue book! The certified programs are a racket since you will inevidibly be back in the dealership for something little every other month. Things here and there add up when you are spending $100 deductible every visit. Ive already had three recalls on mine...mostly minor. Had rear wiper motor, turn signal switch, exhaust sensor, fan blower motor replaced in first year. Overall, the v8 has great pick up for an SUV and it has lots of power. The styling is nicer than same platform explorer. Still rugged! LOUD,LOUD,LOUD! Interior noise is deafening.Handles roughly, very rigid! But it is an suv, not a mercedes.

This SUV has treated me right - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By TH - July 1 - 10:00 amOverall Ive had a great experience with this vehicle. Love the versatility - have hauled all sorts of things home with it - furniture, bags and bags of mulch, mountains of groceries - you name it. The front seats are very comfortable, the leather has worn well, dont know about the back seats since Ive never sat in them but havent had any complaints. Had a few minor problems covered under warranty - I have a great dealer so they are always taken care of quickly, plus a couple of recall items - the windshield wiper problem and the radio.

1999 Mercury Mountaineer - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By BigTime - July 29 - 7:20 pmThe Mercury Mountaineer for the 1999 model year is a solid, fairly luxurious SUV entry from Ford Motor Companys Mercury division. The 5.0 L V8 is a gas-guzzler that despite only putting out 215 HP propels the nearly 4500-pound car well. The interior quality is fairly formidable, though its aesthetics are lacking. The cargo room of the Mountaineer allows it to function as the ideal vehicle to carry baseball, golf, or sporting equipment. The car is extremely reliable, far more so than the current mid-size SUV slate Ford offers. The fifteen-inch chrome wheels are aesthetically-pleasing as is the cars grille which sets it apart from its Ford Explorer sibling.

1999 Mountaineer - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By zcar690 - June 5 - 10:00 amThis has been an outstanding vehicle. I have never bee nmuch of a Ford/Mercury fan but I will be buying another Mountaineer. Unfortunately this vehicle has been in several accidents, but It has saved the lives of my family due to its sturdy construction. It is a bit of a gas hog but its safety and reliability have made it worth the additional cost of fuel.

Great SUV - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer
By brian bigb - February 24 - 9:43 amI have had this suv since my jr. year of high school and had a great experience. I bought it with 82,000 and have 60,000 on it and have had no major problems, just an alternator. I am very rough on it and like to take it into the fields and muddy roads a couple times a year, never has gotten stuck yet! Its great for a trip or an evening out. I tow with it and have had no problems.
