This Year's Model Updates:

For '99 the Mountaineer gets optional rear load leveling and a reverse parking aid. It also receives a new seat design.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines and plenty of safety options make it a great family mover.
Cons:
  • More "distinctive" than an Explorer but not necessarily more attractive.

  • Great SUV - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

This has ben a bullet proof, reliable vehicle on all accounts. Perfect compromise of size, space, and fuel efficiency. Other than the Firestone tire debacle, the only service this vehicle has required was oil and filter changes.

I loved this Ute. in the beginning, but one problem has lead to another. First there was electrical with the Radio. Then they replaced it and we lost all signal hhhmmmmmmmmmm. We put the old one back in, and now I have memorized the functions since I cant see them anymore. The turn signal is now broken, and I think there is a knock in the Transmision. We are currently trying to sell this PO_ and buy a car. We spent 19,000 on this car and a year later we will be lucky to get 14,000 even more pathetic.

  • This SUV has treated me right - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Overall Ive had a great experience with this vehicle. Love the versatility - have hauled all sorts of things home with it - furniture, bags and bags of mulch, mountains of groceries - you name it. The front seats are very comfortable, the leather has worn well, dont know about the back seats since Ive never sat in them but havent had any complaints. Had a few minor problems covered under warranty - I have a great dealer so they are always taken care of quickly, plus a couple of recall items - the windshield wiper problem and the radio.

  • My favorite vehicle - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I love this SUV. Bought it new, have over 170,000 miles on it and hope to get another 170,000 miles out of it. The 302 V8 does and pulls everything I ask it to. This SUV still turns heads and get compliments on it after 10 years of owning it. I also drive a Jeep Commander. For snow I still prefer the Mountaineer. Had the shocks replaced a month ago and ride is very stiff now. Hope it will smooth out with a little more miles on them.

  • VERY GOOD SUV - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I PURCHASED THIS SUV NEW AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. I HAVE THE V6 ENGINE. I LOADED IT WITH ALL OF THE OPTIONS. THE ONLY OPTION THAT I DID NOT WANT WAS THE LEATHER SEATS. THEY ARE COLD IN THE WINTER, AND HOT IN THE SUMMER. THE CLOTH SEATS ALSO HELP TO CUT DOWN ON THE NOISE INSIDE THE SUV. THE AC AND HEATER ARE GREAT. THE RADIO IS THE BEST THAT I HAVE EVERY HAD. I ORDERED IT WITH THE TOW PACKAGE, SO WITH THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON I HAVE REAL 4 WHEEL DRIVE. (TOW PACKAGE GIVES YOU BOTH REAR WHEELS WORKING ALL THE TIME, THIS IS A VERY GOOD THING). ON THE OPEN ROAD I GET 23 MPG AND AROUND TOWN 16 MPG. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER.

The Mercury Mountaineer for the 1999 model year is a solid, fairly luxurious SUV entry from Ford Motor Companys Mercury division. The 5.0 L V8 is a gas-guzzler that despite only putting out 215 HP propels the nearly 4500-pound car well. The interior quality is fairly formidable, though its aesthetics are lacking. The cargo room of the Mountaineer allows it to function as the ideal vehicle to carry baseball, golf, or sporting equipment. The car is extremely reliable, far more so than the current mid-size SUV slate Ford offers. The fifteen-inch chrome wheels are aesthetically-pleasing as is the cars grille which sets it apart from its Ford Explorer sibling.

  • Mountaineer Fan - 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

I have owned this vehicle for over five years and it is one of the best cars I have ever had. The worse problem was a noisy alternator. Other than that just the normal brake, battery, and such replacements have been required. I would buy another except for the gas mileage issue and somewhat harsh ride quality.

This has been an outstanding vehicle. I have never bee nmuch of a Ford/Mercury fan but I will be buying another Mountaineer. Unfortunately this vehicle has been in several accidents, but It has saved the lives of my family due to its sturdy construction. It is a bit of a gas hog but its safety and reliability have made it worth the additional cost of fuel.
