This Year's Model Updates:

The TeleAid emergency calling system is now standard on every M-Class model, and smart dual-stage front airbags know when to deploy with partial force or full force. All models also feature expanded off-road capabilities with new downhill traction control and a new crawling mode for very slow and steep off-roading. Finally, a new M-Class sport package debuts this year.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, excellent bad-weather vehicle.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan, not particularly adept off-road.

  • My ML320 Review - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Among many of the reviews listed on this site, I, too, have had several problems with my ML320. To begin with, problems with the power windows, the power door locks, the alarm system, the airbags, lights coming on and off, etc. have caused me to make numerous trips to the dealer. Many of which I had to sit there and wait for because the dealer wouldnt give me a loaner. My Montero never gave me so many problems, and I am very skeptical about keeping this SUV after the service contract is up. The service is above a 10, but I do not want to have to pay for so many "little" problems.

I purchased this vehicle for my wife for Christmas. She has always wanted one. I was a little hesitant due to the reviews on Edmunds. It appears some people love them and some hate them. We purchased a certified one because of these concerns. It has performed very well and is comfortable to ride in. I really like how stable it is off-road. This vehicle is ridiculously over-priced new (as most are) but has depreciated nicely to where you can get a good sport utility at a reasonable price with a decent warranty. The best thing about the vehicle is the safety features. I bought it for my wife and young son so they could walk away from almost any accident. Its a tank!

  • 9 Month Update - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is my 2nd review of this car. I just bought a 24 boat and Im using the ML320 to pull it. Im extremely pleased with the towing capacity of this somewhat small SUV. It pulls a 4600lb boat with no problem and I live on a large hill. The low gear is a great feature that works well. We have had no issues with the vehicle and it has been fantastic. I drove it 2200 miles across country without an issue. I noticed the battery comment in a previous review. Be careful - Germans dont like maintenance free batteries so you need to check the water levels in your cells or it will die with no warning. Im really impressed with the capabilities of this vehicle.

  • Hey, its a Mercedes!!! - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Ive had some issues. My power switch panel went out at 4000 miles, the car rattles a bit, and it drinks gas, like its going out of style. But, you know what, I still love the car and besides, its a Mercedes. Is it the best vehicle Ive owned, obviously not, but I know that if any of us had a choice of a vehicle to be in, in an accident, most of us would opt for this vehicle. We all take a chance when we buy a car, Ive had 2 lemons in my life time, including a 2000 Honda Accord and a 2001 Diamante. All Im trying to say is that, overall, the ML320 is not bad at all, especially when you consider the safety, luxury and confidence a Mercedes provides.

Has been a great SUV. Looking forward to the new 2004 design.

  • Reliable family car - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought it with 35,000 miles and I have just put 37,500 more miles in 4 years. It had brand-new tires and brake-pads when bought and it is just about time to replace them. I have spent about $500 a couple of time extra for repairs (not regular maintenance) and my only complaint would be that I have to keep an eye on the engine oil level. If I drive over 70 miles per hour on a hot day, it will surely burn oil. Other than that I am pleased with this SUV.

  • Excellent SUV -Unfortunately made in USA - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is a great SUV but as an owner of other MB vehicles it is very upsetting the lack of quality control of the US plant.

  • Good Used SUV - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I have owned this car for 2 years and have experienced some major repairs; however, the big stuff has been covered by warranty first dollar. My biggest gripe has been the fuel mileage - 17 MPG; however, the trade off is a larger vehicle that is comfortable and very safe, as well as stylish. You can get a used ML for as low as $6500, depending on the mileage. If you are into long drives and/or need a larger vehicle, I would recommend. I am looking to down size now as the vehicle meet its purpose with no major compliants.

  • sad but true - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mechanically this vehicle is good for at least several hundreds of thousands of miles. The ride is as quiet and good as any luxury vehicle. The sound system high quality but the speakers are not well placed. The integrated MCS console for radio/cassette/CD/GPS/telephone is really well designed and easy to comprehend and use relative to its complexity. Brake wear excessive, full replacement at 10,000 miles! Second set of brakes lasted another 30,000+ (a lot more highway driving). Nagging electronic problems, still having mostly electronic problems requiring service calls & weve had the vehicle for almost 2 and a half years.

  • This Car is NOT Worth It!! - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

The power is awesome on the 55 but that is where it stops for greatness. The inside design is awful, no back- seat AC, and the back-seat window controllers are badly placed. The car needs constant service for its brakes which will squeak like an old Buick shortly after coming off the dealership lot, not to mention the fuel costs will put a hole in your wallet in no time. The drivers side window is imfamous for not working, and the alignment is off despite repeated attempts to fix it.
