This Year's Model Updates:

The TeleAid emergency calling system is now standard on every M-Class model, and smart dual-stage front airbags know when to deploy with partial force or full force. All models also feature expanded off-road capabilities with new downhill traction control and a new crawling mode for very slow and steep off-roading. Finally, a new M-Class sport package debuts this year.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, excellent bad-weather vehicle.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan, not particularly adept off-road.

  • pricey for okee dokee rig - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I had to drive 70 mls to the nearest dealer to fix the window that would not roll up last winter when it was 22 deg F out then the parts where on "national recall" so go back then something broke when the guy put it together so 3rd trip the first service work oil change ect. they asked if I wanted to have this upgraded fuel regulator installed no charge I said sure I had no idea I would be there from time of opening until 1:30 in the after noon cause to get to the top of the gas tank they have to take out the back seat and open an access hole in the floor then take of the drivers rear tire and pull out the platic wheel well (tough job). I was more impressed with the car I traded in.

  • Big disappointment - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I bought this car as a Starmark certified vehicle from Mercedes. Almost immediately I noticed some issues: Two exterior plastic body pieces spontaneously broke, interior plastic parts seemed prone to breakage as well. Also, the breaks were very noisey and fluttery (dealer told me to live w/). Eventually, more serious (i.e. expensive) issues arose: fuel injectors became blocked, spark plugs fouled, coils needed replacement, power steering line ruptured... all within 21000 miles of purchase. Of the thousands of dollars in repair bills virtually nothing was covered by the Mercedes Starmark warranty. Shockingly poor quality, esp. from a company with such a premium reputation (and price tag)

  • 2001 ML320 - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought based on MB reputation for quality. This vehicle is a disgrace to the marque. Poor interior build quality and very poor dealer service. In 2 years and 30K was at dealer 6 times for warranty (replaced window tracks 2X - rattles, glove compartmen and map pockets fell OUT, center console top broke, Windows and sunroof covered in Goo from iside door and ceiling sheetmetal, Drivers seat panel fell off. Dealer service even worse. Stated work complete that was not, Actually told me the ML was not built to MB standards.

  • If you want and SUV... keep looking! - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

If you are looking to forge a strong bond with your Mercedes service advisor, then this car is for you! The ML is a far cry short of the quality that one expects from an automobile manufacturer such as the venerable Mercedes-Benz. This car has had more problems requiring shop intervention than I care to share, and ironically, when I shared my feedback with their national call center, they seemed completely complacent and offered no real advice other than to "lemon law it." So my advice, if are looking for an SUV, dont stop with the ML... keep looking!

  • Ill never buy another Benzo - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

like the ride, handling, power and interior.Reliability is lacking.MB unresponsive to numerous correspondence.17k miles, brought it back 4 times. Was told thats why you have a warranty.i own a 12yr old BMW, brought it back twice/both times BMW main office called me. MB doesnt care. Would never buy another one. Service Pickup is a joke/have to wait 2 weeks for a loaner car.not worth paying a premium.build quality is below par for a MB.

  • Nowhere to rest drivers elbows! - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

Theres excellent & smooth V8 power, & the most carlike handling of any SUV that has a low range transfer case, but the power steering is WAY overboosted & there is NO where to rest your elbows when you are holding the steering wheel, if you are average or tall sized. VERY fatiguing! Dont buy one based on a short test drive, but imagine how tired your arms will get on a longer drive while youre forced to hold them out in front of you the whole trip.

  • ML320 Overengineered - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

Car had most unusual things go wrong. Replaced 2 Windshield washer containers, rear end and shocks, all audio failed on 700 mile trip, sunroof leaked, A/C leaked all over front passenger compartment.Rear seats difficult to work. Storage area had angled floor so luggage forced against rear door and cracked the door panel.

  • mechanical piece of junk - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

three recalls -- one of which could have allowed serious injury or death -- and now the drive train is gone -- 26,000 total highway miles. the dealership has been outstanding -- but i guess they would have to be with this piece of junk. German kwowhow...ill take japaneese quality.

  • an over-priced hunk of junk - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR! The AMG engine, navigation system and handling are all excellent. Beyond that, you had might as well buy a ford festiva. The glove box, sun roof, elec. seat adjuster, optional rooftop cargo container have all malfunctioned or broken. The alignment has needed repeated repair. We had a flat, tire was patched. Patch gave way within one week. Dealership customer service is nonexistant. Brakes now sqeak and car stalls out frequently. A complete POS.

  • Disappointed - 2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

I leased my first M-class in 2001 enjoyed it very much. End of lease purchased a 2001 M-class. Currently I have 85,000 on this M class with a easy care 100,000 mile warranty. Good thing, fuel pump (towed), gas/air mixture filter, sun roof air vents, electric window control, ESP and anti lock brakes. These were all covered by a warranty with a $100 deductible each time. Normal maintenance expensive. Oil changes $200 - $300. Rotors and pads for all four wheels $1,200, plugs and wires $800. I am thinking of trading it..
