This Year's Model Updates:

Ever expanding and improving its brood of stately vehicles, Mercedes gives the C-Class a complete overhaul for 2001. A choice of two new engines, increased safety features and sleeker sheet metal tempt those who seek to gain a foothold into the exalted realms of Mercedes ownership.

Pros:
  • Solid construction, free scheduled maintenance, S-Class Jr. styling.
Cons:
  • Tight squeeze for backseat occupants, pricey for its segment.

  • Great Service - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The service at Bob Kings Autohaus has been SUPERIOR, lucky because I take it in on a regular basis for one thing or another. The computer chip/remote key went haywire after 2 1/2 years; the door handle had to be replaced; and Ive had to buy new tires twice already. I think I better dump it before the warranty runs out!

Car handles very well, C320 has excellent power...ride is "sporty" and fun to drive. Some minor inconveniences such as side view mirrors too small...cup holder inconvenient. Difficult to get in and out of rear seats.

We have had our C320 for almost two years now and we are very pleased. We have been to the dealership once so far for the first routine service included in the price of the car. That is it! I think the build quality is very high. This is our first MB but have had alot of other "luxury" type cars in the past to compare. It is that right mix between luxury and sport. Before buying we test drove a BMW 330ci, Lexus IS300, Lexus ES300, Acura TL, an Infinity, an Audi and last the C320 all on the same day. We were 1 block down the road and my wife said "this is the one". Overall very pleased.

  • Good car overall -- a few bugs - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C240 is a great road car. Absolutely wonderful on a long road trip. Comfortable, powerful--it rides like its on rails. Its fine in the city too, but fabulous on the open highway. Ive had a few problems. It had to be towed once because the electronic key failed, and currently the sunroof wont work properly. When I press the sunroof button, it opens a little way, not entirely. If press the button about 20 times I can get the sunroof open. Annoying little bugs like that are bothersome when youve paid this much.

Twenty-eight items addressed under warranty. Everything from seals around the doors to front end bushings to a/c to radio to interior trim to engine stalls to missing/broken bolts to frequently burning out lamps. Attitude of the service advisor? We dont build them, just fix them. Advise of the service advisor in response to how much will fixes cost? Well, may be you wont be so picky then. They just ignore the fact that this car hasnt been a good one!

  • C230 & C240 - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

On the whole my c240 is an exceptional ride in comparison to its predecessor the c230. The New C has a tighter suspention, better acceleration, and traction controll which helps a great deal in the rain and snow.I have put about 10,000 miles on my c240 and have experienced no problems.

  • Computer replacement - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I had to replace the main computer board in their c320? Took my car in to carmax after the coolant light came on. First they said it was the fan and replaced it. I was told the tech broke off the sensor and now all I know is this simple repair has ballooned into a nightmare.

  • Addictive Lemon - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I look forward to the drive everytime I get behind the wheel and step on the gas, as it has power, handling, and style. What I hate is the reliability. I had more problems with this one car than with my 10 previous cars combined, including a 20 year old $300 Accord. I still love it but its easy to go bankrupt fixing this car. Problems: power steering pump broke, cam and crank sensors ($1k repair), dual zone climate not dual anymore, vent solenoid making noises, alternator replaced, numerous light bulb failures, other minor electrical gremlins that I stopped bothering with. Do not buy this car unless you have FULL warranty or money to fix it. Otherwise great drivers car.

  • Not what you expect from Mercedes - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I bought my car in Apr of 2001 thinking "yeah its alot of money for a car but its Mercedes!. Within a few months, I had to take the car back to the dealer because it was making clicking noise from windows and the remote key wouldnt work sometimes. I got it fixed. Then the trunk wouldnt open. I got it fixed. Now the lock (the piece that goes up and down) popped out completely and the lock wouldnt work again. Its just one thing after another. I dont think I will ever buy a Mercedes again. If I am spenging $37K on a small car like this, I want quality and durability since its definitly not the size of the car I am paying for.

  • Love the car, BUT! - 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
    By -

Love all the cool features, gadgets, style and performance, BUT the reliability with the electronics are very disappointing... somethings always "broken" and the dealer usually is unable to duplicate. Do you think we invent the fact that it has a problem????
