This Year's Model Updates:

The SLK's 2.3-liter supercharged engine gets dropped into the C-Class, replacing the normally aspirated engine of the last C230. Performance has been turned up a notch. In addition, leather seating surfaces are now standard across the C-Class line.

Pros:
  • Fast and luxurious.
Cons:
  • Initial hesitation when taking off from a standstill.

Bought used 4 years old. Great performance wise, no doubt. Within 2nd year of ownership, had to replace wiper, AC, rotors. Sometimes windows dont work. Dash lights go on. In 3rd year of ownership, rust on both sides of door, under wheel well. This is a garaged car. My 13 year old Corolla had no rust at all! Very disappointed, especially for a Benz. The body integrity is poor on the car I own. I am looking forward to getting rid of it.

  • 10 years of happy ownership - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Bought this car with 5000 miles on it in December of 1999. Over the years, have had to repair various things, and spent a little more to do so than I had on my Hondas, but, not an outrageous amount. And, I cannot tell you the last time I had to do anything other than normal maint. (NOT at a MB dealer - use an independent!) The gas mileage is outstanding - nearly 30 mpg on the highway, 25 around town. Car feels solid still, and the trunk is very large and shaped well - much more usable than our current other car - Jaguar XJ. We use it now for any dirty jobs we have, as it is getting old, yet, the paint job is MUCH better than the Jag we have - seriously MUCH MUCH better.

  • Fun to drive - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I love my C280. It handles like a dream, small turning radius, lots of power, not too big, not too small. Have had some electrical problems ( replaced starter, alternator, fuel guage after 50K mi). I will probably buy another small MBZ or the new BMW 330I

Overall, its a fun car to drive, but quality is poor. Its had much lower quality than any other car Ive owned (Pontiac, Jeep, Buick, Datsun) and maintenance costs are significantly more.

  • Great purr - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

What a great purr that 4 cylinder has. Sounds like a little tiger who will soon growl on the highway, which it does! Good kick, great handling, interior is just classy enough without overdoing it. I drive it to work every morning and it brings a smile to my face, which is good for my employees ;) Ive had it for a year now and I enjoy every minute of it. It has been reliable, except for the wiper motor that suddenly died on me. MB said it was due to ice being stuck...funny enough I park my car in the garage. A fun car to have for zipping in traffic or passing on the highway. I recommend the purchase.

Really fun to drive. Love the immediate response when I press the gas. Purchased used w/ 63K miles from a mom & pop dealership (Big Mistake!!!) Stay w/ a larger dealership who offers the MB warranty or you will regret it!! In less than 10 months already replaced the drag link ($500) and condenser ($1200) My independant warrranty covers harly anthing costly.

  • My German rocket - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I have owned my Benz for over a year. It has been a wonderful car. At first I was skeptical about owning a German car because ,I heard they had a lot of electrical problems. My car has only needed a wiper, oil change and tire matenance. The brakes are the strongest ever.

  • Saved My Life - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Distracted and going 70 on a 2-lane road, the front tire hit the gravel shoulder. I was spun around across the road and into the ditch on the other side. I could feel the car working to stabilize itself and my thought at the time was thank goodness Im in this vehicle. I should not be here today. Despite the severity of the spinout, the car survived without any problem. I was amazed. I got back up on the road (slowly), got to my Interstate onramp, slowly accelerated up to 65 and went on my way! Had it checked at my destination and there was absolutely nothing wrong. Amazing.

  • Wish I could give this a good rating - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
    By -

I purchased this car new and I will give it one thing- it is a lot of fun to drive. However, I have invested nearly $8,000 in repairs in the last 4 years.(starter, gas tank, ball joints,ac compressor, suspension breakage, etc, etc). It is always garaged and has had to have a lot of body work because of rust problems. The dashboard looks like a lit Christmas tree! Ive taken good care of this car, but just cant wait for another $1500 repair to occur. I will never buy another Mercedes- period. Theyre too expensive to repair. Ive owed 3- Series BMWs that were more reliable.
