This Year's Model Updates:

The SLK's 2.3-liter supercharged engine gets dropped into the C-Class, replacing the normally aspirated engine of the last C230. Performance has been turned up a notch. In addition, leather seating surfaces are now standard across the C-Class line.

Pros:
  • Fast and luxurious.
Cons:
  • Initial hesitation when taking off from a standstill.

I just bought a 1999 C230 Sedan Kompressor with less than 69k miles, in great condition internal/external. Apart from a little cricket noise the car is perfect. Ive owned a 2001 coupe C230 Kompressor and I prefer the sedan for its solid stance and build quality. Ive owned 4 others E, TD, E4matic and very happy with all of them. I regret selling them - think this time will be a keeper.

Ive had BMWs, Audis, an Alpha Romeo, and a Maserati. Each ones strenght was overshadowed by its reliability weaknesses. My 230 is a joy to drive. Its very responsive yet gets great gas mileage. It has been a low maintenance, strong and reliable car. Im afraid to get rid of it.

I just bought my 99 C230 Kompressor Sport, black on black. I have a 120 mile round trip commute that I make a couple times a week. I am tired of cars falling apart with routine maintenance and not having any resale value at all. My last three American cars resale value has been abysmal. What a joy it is to drive again. I havent had this much fun since my 1997 Maxima SE, just now Im in a much more solid car. Five years old and still turns heads. None of the Mercedes maintenance horrors others predicted. Research the models on edmunds, consumer reports, etc. and youll see the 99 C Class scores above average in most categories. Im hooked now!

Before warmed up enough, a little too sluggish. Experienced a few glitches in the shift. I dont know why I cannot direct the heater toward feet only.

  • Expensive to Own - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I bought this car with 41000 miles on it and it now has 86000. I have spent $4500 in repairs, and am advised by a reputable local shop that it needs $2500 more, but that does not include the odd windshield wiper motor that threatens to go out periodically or the power seat controls that only work half the time. Not the half at the shop where they commonly intone, "Unless its not working when we look at it, we cant tell whats wrong with it." Handles well and gets decent mileage. Built-in analog cell phone only works half the time. Next car will be a Honda/Toyota.

Big problems with fuel evaporation system;replaced under warranty, now needs to be replaced again since fuelling is sometimes impossible and the gas indicator does/doesnt indicate, lights flash, etc.Brake discs should also be of much better quality. Seats are THE WORST over long distance of any Ive had in 40 years. My chiropractor made a fortune !

  • Going back to GM - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

When I first purchased my C230 Kompressor I was really excited but that quickly passed after experiencing the cost of repair The wiper was the first thing to malfunction Cost of repair 500 dollars. Brake job 600 dollars Mass airflow sensor 400 dollars All around 90,000 miles. Transmission shifting very poor since I purchased. Will not buy Benz again GM much more dependable and less costly to repair.

Bought with 50000 miles and worked fine for 2 years. Needed $1500 schedule B at atbout 75000k but that solved the acceleration problems. Had to fix the crank sensor at 76000k and no one really knew the problem cause. $250 for that one, then the engine light at 80000k was the air sensor- not a big deal but cant get car inspected with an engine light on. Air sensors are $500 from MB but got one from ebay, plopped it in and problems went away. Now at 104k and have had no issues..oh yeah, watch front springs they break at 90k. Replaced those as well. Power seats work when they want to and now fuel gage is not working all the time- problem comes and goes so unknown cause. Get trans fluid chged!

  • "Mid-life" Treat - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Now I know! My wife and I cant believe how much we enjoy "her" C280. For 30 years weve had 4X4 SUVs, compacts, vans and all the rest, but nothing can compare with this car. I didnt think anyone made a car like this anymore. Im so pleased with the road handling, the attention to detail, and the V6 that just gets up and goes. My wife is thrilled with the comfort and the classic styling, it fits her like a glove. We couldnt have ask for a nicer car. In my mind, even if Im a little biased, this car will go down as a classic MB sedan in years to come.

  • Good Car - 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Not looking for MB, but wife convinced me to test one. I was hooked! Drove and handled nicely, quiet, and plenty of power with decent mileage (24-25 mpg). Would have liked better acceleration and responsiveness when I push the peddle down, but still good for a V-6 and relatively heavy car. I have about 150,000 miles on it and it still runs and handles great. I have not put much money into repairs other than basic stuff. Harmonic balancer went bad, but MB fixed it under a recall (no cost to me). Complaints are wiper motor going bad, interior wearing out, LCD display/dash lights going out, and the body is beginning to rust around the wheel wells and sun roof. I would by a MB again!
