This Year's Model Updates:

Not much changes on Mazda's minivan. Keyless entry is standard on MPV LX, and the AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system is standard on LX and ES models. Child safety-seat anchors have been added to all MPV models, as have new exterior color choices. The 2.5-liter V6 engine now complies with NLEV emissions standards.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, versatile seating configurations, sharp exterior styling, agile handling, good visibility.
Cons:
  • Weedy engine, unimpressive interior materials, no traction control available, limited maximum cargo capacity.

Weve been having fun with our van since we got it. Perfect for a family of 4 and when you need to bring some frinds along just lift the third seat out of the floor.

Our family loves our MPV. Great size, easy to manuever and holds everything weve needed to haul. The tumble-under third row seat is a great feature. The kids love the working rear windows.

Probably will have to replace the MPV soon, as it is getting up there in miles. It has been a good, reliable family vehicle for almost ten years. Still wish it had more power and a 5- speed automatic. The Ford engine (from the Contour) was the only mechanical challenge. It has a minor oil leak now, and the exhaust manifolds are leaking a bit, making warm-up slightly loader than normal. The van still looks great and rides and handles great, and the interior is tight and solid with no squeaks, rattles or broken/loose parts. Highest quality car I have ever owned, other than the aforementioned engine. I wish Mazda had not discontinued. Will likely go with the new for 2011 Honda Odyssey.

I like the car-like feel and behavior. Solid body, nimble and fun-to-drive. It has enough power to go zoom zoom.

  • MPV, Great family Van - 2001 Mazda MPV

I have had this van for little over 2 years now. It has 35000 on it, and no problems. Its only been in the shop for oil changes and a brake inspection. Easy to drive. Had a ford windstar for 5 years before this vehicle and the MPV is much nicer. Not only is it about 600 pounds lighter then windstar, its also about a foot shorter, so its easier to park and fits in the garage much better. Power rear door windows, cabin filter standard, hide away third seat that folds forward or backwards and all 3 rows of seat recline. 25mpg freeway, handles well. Have hauled over 1100 pounds of building supplies in the back. Great family van.

  • My 1st Mazda, my last Mazda - 2001 Mazda MPV

This car has been a lot of trouble. I put on a lot of highway miles, but have put more money into this car in 125,000 miles than I ever did with our Hondas or Toyotas with over 200,000 miles on them. The engine light comes on every 10,000 miles with something wrong. 9 months ago I replaced the catalytic converter, $1100, and now they say the "other" converter needs replacing for another $1100. I am looking at Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna....no more money sucked out for that vehicle. Its not like we dont do every scheduled maintenance either. Gas mileage is poor for the size car. It is priced about $4000 too high and the resale on it is terrible. Mazda has lost our business forever.

  • Great minivan - 2001 Mazda MPV

Ive had this minivan for almost 2 years now and Ive been very pleased with it. Only one minor problem fixed under warranty the same day, no other mechanical problems at all. Even though I have the 2001 version with the supposed "under-performing" engine, Ive had no issues with the performance at all. The gas mileage could be a little better but otherwise I have no complaints. I get compliments on it all the time, even though its not brand new anymore.

Handles well, smooth ride, Some options are "worthless", like the visor mirrors and the tray under the passenger seat. The rear folding seat is a nice convenience as are the center removable seats, this gives many options for packing & day to day use. Leg room for the center and rear seats is tight. For the most part its a fun car, ZOOM ZOOM!

  • Been a great car- bring it back, Mazda! - 2001 Mazda MPV

This has been a great car for 11 years (2001 model), and still going. I have been holding off getting a new car hoping that Mazda will come back with a real minivan- the 5 is too small. I have over 200,000 miles now, and its still going without any major issues. Been thinking about getting something new, but cant justify because this baby keeps on chugging away. It has done the full gamut of use- toting loads of kids to practices and activities, towing my 15 foot sailboat, vacation trips, hauling junk in the cargo zone, canoe on the roof, etc. What a versatile vehicle, and 20 miles per gallon.

  • Been very reliable, gas consumption bad - 2001 Mazda MPV

Bought this car new to replace a 1991 MPV. Gas mileage was good to start but as it gets older its terrible. Hate the spare tire setup. Its the worst to try and change to the spare. It broke right after the warranty expired. Mazda needs to re-think the mechanism of storing the spare. Mazda also needs to be real on the carpet color choices. Kids, pets, etc. are riding in this vehicle and the light colored carpeting takes a severe beating. Thank goodness for steam cleaners. Upholstery is light but cleans up nicely. Leg room and clearance between back seat and middle seats are hard to maneuver unless youre a kid. I like the middle seat feature of being able to move them apart.
