This Year's Model Updates:

With the redesigned Jeep Cherokee's debut pushed back until the summer of 2001 as a 2002 model, the current model will remain in place for the 2001 model year with minor changes. The 4.0-liter PowerTech inline-six engine is standard equipment in all 2001 Cherokees, with the 2.5-liter inline four, along with the SE trim, dropped. The previous Limited trim is also dropped, with the former Classic trim now labeled Limited. All 2001 Cherokees offer child seat tethers as standard equipment.

Pros:
  • Powerful engine, affordable, extremely capable off-road.
Cons:
  • Boxy styling, small rear seat, difficult entry/exit.

  • LOVE the exterior but unreliable - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

I bought my car new in 2001 (Jeep Cherokee Sport). I still LOVE the look of the exterior and its great in the snow. I thought I would keep it forever for that reason. However, it is 4 years old now and we have had to bring it in 4 times in the past 9 months to get it fixed, totaling over $2500. The AC compressor blew out and had to be replaced. The brakes have already had to be replaced several times and the engine light seems like its always on regardless of how many times weve brought it in. Im really disappointed but I think we have to sell it now because we simply cant afford it anymore. If you take into account our repair bills over the past year, our monthly payment has been >$600/month ...ugh!

  • like the "old-school" styling - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

To me, this suv just looks like an suv is supposed to: tough. The new Liberty looks too much like the old Rav4s--to rounded, small, and wimpy looking. Ive enjoyed my Cherokee, and wish it would have snowed more often last winter. It plows through snow like a knife through butter. I think the V6 has pretty good acceleration, and it cruises at 75-85 mph quite smoothly. For only a V6, the gas mileage seems a bit low...only about 17-18 mpg on average. The inside could use more storage areas. Theres not really anyplace to put things besides the armrest cavity and the glovebox.

  • Great All-Purpose Rider - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

So far Ive had no problems mechanically with this car. Ive taken it off-road and it handles nicely, while on-road is even better. In general, for a vehicle with this kind of mileage (+50000) its in good shape. It does have some problems, though. When 4 wheel drive high range is engaged, if you make a sharp turn the wheels lock. Also, when put in reverse for too long, it sometimes stalls or sputters. You need to find the right kind of tires, too. Wet handling is below average, even with 4WD. The vehicle corners well for an SUV and has a good turn radius, just make sure its not cornering heavily above 50mph. At speeds above 80 on a straightaway highway, it becomes very shaky.

  • Horrible in Wet Weather - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

I have the 2WD model and its UNSAFE on any kind of wet pavement - in snow, rain, or even if someons watering their lawn. If the road is wet, I have to be VERY careful about applying the brakes or making a turn. Its too light in the back and fishtails even at very low speeds. Forget about driving it in any kind of snow/ice. I wish Id bought the base 4x4 instead of the 2WD Limited, but living in Dallas I didnt think Id use 4x4. It also has an annoyingly LOUD humming / vibration when idling in cold weather, and its very noisy on the road.

Ive had this jeep for a couple of years and I love driving it. It handles great in the rain and snow of Ohio, and feels very safe in adverse conditions. I havent had any major problems with it yet but my understanding is that it could be a problem later on. The biggest drawback to this vehicle is its overlack of comfort and interior amenities.

  • Dont be fooled by its longevity - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Bought new in 2001. Front end shimmy & pulsating brakes from day one (never fixed). Taken to the shop 12 times over a 2 year period. Problems either came back again or were replaced by others. I tried repeatedly to get satisfaction from Chrysler with no success. I was even told by an employee at their complaint department that all Cherokees have that front end shimmy problem and there is nothing that can be done. I finally got rid of this lemon a few months ago. I had intended to buy a Dodge pickup after this vehicle, but due to this experience, I will NEVER buy another Chrysler product!!

  • Mediocre at Best - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

I had to have the transmission replaced after 6 years. Of course, I could be dealing with a dishonest repair shop. Chronic problem with number 3 misfire, rattling, drive train seems to clunk in rear and under shifter. I am not rough on the car, I do not off road, but I do use the car off road occasionally for hunting, fishing, or snowy conditions.

  • Great Utility Vehicle - 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Jeep defined the SUV with the Cherokee. This is my second one (first was a 1996, same color - black; I drove to 185k miles). They did a nice job refinishing the interior. Jeeps can do anything - I pull a 5000lb boat, haul carpentry tools and materials and drive through 3 feet of fresh snow (before the plows clear).
