  • its ok - not great - 1999 Jeep Cherokee

I bought this car brand new in 99. Had to replace transfer case ($2500), window regulator, speaker and wiring, front brake calipers and a few days ago the thermostat plus all kinds of other small stuff. Maybe other cars are worse, but until now it drove fine but in the last few months Ive had to spend a couple thousand dollars to keep it going. With 57,000 miles, Im worried about the next 40,000. Maybe its time to sell.

.When I purchased my jeep, it had 7 miles. I now have 267,000 actual miles. This Cherokee has never needed any engine or transmission work. However, I have had to replace the following: rotors 60k, radiator/ water pump 230k(I did not flush it enough), front washer motor 150k, power steering pump 170k, alternator 180k, ignition/steering column problems 265k. Also, expect to have to replace the rubber mat that protects the underside of the engine. I think anyone would agree these numbers are impressive. I am very pleased that I chose a cherokee, it has been relatively inexpensive to maintain.

I think that a jeep cheokee is a great car. I like how is 4wd and the nice body style. Only setback is the gas, it guzzels it. But i do love my Jeep!

I always wanted a Jeep Cherokee growing up, finally got one and Ive been loving it ever since! With two kids and a wife, this is a very comfortable ride on the 450 mile round trip to the in laws house we take about 4-5 times a year. Goes excellent in the snow and mud. At 100,250 miles, still going strong and havent had any problems.

This vehicle is the worst Ive ever owned. It has been under two recalls, the foglamp switch was replaced twice in a two year period, it needs to be replaced again but Im not going to put the money into it. The drivers window mechanism went out in January of 2003, the vehicle wasnt even 4 years old yet. I have been extremely unhappy with this vehicle. My number one complaint is gas mileage.

  • engine fails at 36,000 miles - 1999 Jeep Cherokee
    By -

Interior - very spartan. Good acceleration with 4.0 liter engine. Occasional (5) problems starting the vehicle - alternate start procedure effective except when VERY COLD. Cooling system problems. 36,600 miles - cooling system - catastrophic failure at highway speed. Fried engine. Engine Replacement required. I do not recommend this vehicle to anyone! I will buy a 4 runner next time!

  • The Original SUV...Scrap The Liberty!!! - 1999 Jeep Cherokee

In just over two years of ownership and over 100k miles, one word sums it up, RELIABLE. Engine has always averaged 19.1 mpg according to the trip computer. Not bad for a big 6 cyl. and a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick, but hey, its all part of the charm!! Other than oil changes, 1 set of tires, 1 brake job, and replacing the transfer case at 171,000 miles this thing starts and goes every day without fail. Its Simple Design makes for a very dependable AND easy to maintain vehicle even for the novice mechanic.

  • Jeep in the Family - 1999 Jeep Cherokee

This is my first Jeep and I love the thing! I have about 75,000 miles on it. The engine remains strong and responsive. The off-road and weather handling capability is outstanding. Along with normal maintenance, I have only had to replace the rotors and brake pads (better then my 2000 Mercury - replaced at 20000 miles). I was sad to see that Chrysler started building the Liberty in its place. I had a chance to drive one and they can keep it.

  • Unstoppable - 1999 Jeep Cherokee

I bought my Cherokee from a salvage yard after it was hit on the front left wheel, ran into a pole or stoplight, and then flipped on its side. After that much abuse, I didnt expect it to start, much less be drivable. But amazingly, all it took was a new battery to get the Jeep started. I had a mechanic shop replace most of the steering system (the impact to the wheel bent a few parts), and then I replaced the panels that were damaged. Its quite amazing that I could pull the Jeeps exterior apart using simple hand tools and I was even able to salvage some the bent pieces. After repairing it, I never had any trouble. The engine will start in zero temperature and never causes problems.

  • Disappointment - 1999 Jeep Cherokee

I was really jazzed when I bought my jeep, but things have gone down since I have passed the 30k milage marker. I had to replace my rotors, I have an electrical problem that will not go away, and every oil change, it is time to balance the tires again. When the tires are out of balance, it sounds like a plane traveling down the street. Biggest disappointment is how fast the value of this 3 year old vehicle is dropping.
