Took my Cherokee to the junkyard today. Bought it new in 1996. Its been in all environments, the coast, mountains, deserts and cities and performed like a champ. Replaced a water pump, brakes, tires and radio. The only thing that didnt work was the hydraulics on the rear hatch. Rescued stranded motorists, carried Christmas trees and was given to my son as his first car, after it had over 209K miles racked up on it. My inexperienced son ran into a F250 Ford dualie and tore the rear axle right off that truck. The Jeep suffered terrible front end damage. My son didnt have a scratch. I should be so lucky, as to go out as big a hero as that Jeep!

Best car (reliability) I have ever owned. The cast iron inline 6 cylinder is amazing. This is the best snow car I have ever driven. I can do 55 mph on 4-6 inches of snow without even a wobble. It is a true snow car. I do all tune up, oil changes, and all maintenance on this vehicle. It is as simple as a 1960s car. Biggest mistake Chrysler made was to stop building these in 2001. The jeep liberty (successor) does not even hold a candle to it. All SUVs started with this design. It is a true on or off road SUV.

I HAVE HAD A 1996 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT FOR 7 YEARS AND ITS THE LAST ONE. THIS CAR HAS A FRAME RAIL AND STEERING GEAR BOX BOLTS CRACKING RECALL PROBLEM. DONT BUY ANY REGULAR CHEROKEE. CHRYSLER WILL NOT PAY FOR MY REPAIRS AND ONLY 2500 ARE ON THE RECALL LIST, BUT MINE CAR IS NOT. THOUSANDS OR MORE ARE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM AND IT CAN CAUSE A CRASH. MY FRAME RAIL CRACKED AND LOST MY STEERING THREE TIMES IN THE LAST 1.5 YEARS. THIS IS A BAD CAR!

Has well over 100K miles and still running strong. Brakes have a slight pulsating problem.

I love this vehicle. It is my 4th vehicle, and easily the best. Its not the most expensive but its the newest and has the best feature content and performance of all the rest. The only problems Ive had were an old worn radiator hose that had to be replaced ($8 big whoop), and a tire that fell apart. Not the Cherokees fault. Worn Uniroyal tires...It has brand new Michelins now. Big improvement.

Purchased our jeep in 1998 for my wife to drive. At first glance she didnt like it, until she hopped in and took it for a spin. Havent been able to get her out of it since. Excellent vehicle. Some maintenance in past 10 years but nothing major. I hope to get her another vehicle and I will get the jeep. If jeep would make the Cherokee again i would by one in a heartbeat. 196,000 miles and still going strong.

I bought my 96 Cherokee 2 Door Sport 10 years ago with 35,000 miles on it. The only work that I have had to do to it was replace the muffler and tailpipe, set of front brake pads and a starter. It now has 145,000 miles on it and uses no oil and gets around 22-23 mpg. It is the most efficient 4wd I have ever owned. I wish they still made them! My body is still in great shape despite the winters here in PA. The paint isnt the best but it has yet to rust out. The engine is a work horse and will take me anywhere I need to go!

  • Best midsize SUV bargain - 1996 Jeep Cherokee

Overall, an awesome vehicle. Its made by Jeep and certainly lives up to its name being a very serious off roading vehicle. Low weight and a very powerful engine makes for great acceleration and power (extremely high power to weight ratio). Dated design, but I like it - Id prefer to call it rugged.

My Dad bought my Mom this Jeep 11 years ago on Valentines Day. Its elegant red paint still shines with an ocasionnal wax. Only miner work done except for a radiator and a new A.C. It shakes at 45- 50 mpg but its still a prety good Jeep.
